smart pathing, choosing good cards/relics, minimalizing the amount of mistakes you make in combat and a degree of luck.

Don't take every card, most are shit
Take card removal or transformation when you can, get rid of your Strikes and Defends about equally (with a preference for Strikes first)
Fight elites if you have good damage output

I've been getting into a few clones that are pretty good and have much more variety. STS is great but every game is practically the same. Something like Night of the Full Moon Has got twice the jobs just at the start.
