I'd also recommend paying special attention to how the Jews fled from the Holocaust and back where family and ancestors had come from, and what the United Nations back then tried to do with a compromise, what happened after that, etc. There's lots of basic history that many people never read. That might explain why some people don't know that Hamas is a terrorist group.

History is honestly so garbage here. I'm just glad I had a very liberal history teacher in 7th grade who bothered to teach us about different view points and different religions and honestly I feel like I'm way more open minded because of it. But really I learned history on my own.

It's probably because it's so wildly inconsistent from state to state and city to city.

It was city public schools in Chicago which has always had a bad reputation for public school quality, so I'd be shocked if in general the history lessons weren't even better at basically every other school in the country by comparison.

Well I went to top-20 public middle school in california and a top-10 public high school in california that was nationally known. So I had some amazing teachers.

Nice. Generally I am happy with the education I got from the Chicago Public School system tbh, but that's awesome! Hopefully we can get things back on track and start educating our future generations better lol.

Tbh history is my second worst subject, after math and followed by science. I know what it is though, but I wouldn't pass a quiz.

It's not exactly rocket science. It's literally just about reading a handful of paragraphs. It can be done in under 3 minutes for basically anyone in like 4th grade or higher.

People and most students are just lazy, and they prefer to be programmed by the drones online using bots/psy-ops/agendas/astro-turfing/etc to pollute the ideas out there.

Most Republicans are in favor of Holocaust education and supporting Jews last I checked, as are most Democrats.

It's regressive leftists and alt-rightists who front anti-semitic narratives that way.

Yeah it should be mandatory reading material and discussion material. That and Mao's Great Leap Forward over in China, and the Soviet Union gulags too, since we have a bunch of young people also regurgitating that bullshit over on the regressive left fringes of Twitter/Reddit, etc lol.

Being pissed that Israel runs an apartheid state isn't anti-Semitic and it's intellectually dishonest to claim that criticism of Israel's policies towards the Palestinians is anti-Semitic. It's just the way people on the right have had to frame it to prevent any criticism of their favorite arms purchaser.

It's literally identical to tankies who try and pretend that China isn't committing a genocide and try and frame it as a "yellow peril" paranoia. It's disingenuous and disgusting.

And while we are discussing genocides that should be mandatorily discussed let's not forget that the deaths caused by the Irish Potato Famine and the Bengal Famine were entirely preventable and thus genocides by proxy.

We learned it in 7th grade at my school and my history teacher was a Jew so she actually taught it, no sugar coated bullshit.

She even got tear eyes at one point showing us a slideshow of the clean up, piles upon piles of bodies that were as skinny as skeletons.

I've asked questions along very similar lines for years about the Nazi judeocide: why is this event so special, yet apparently not others? But a few months ago someone posted (can't remember if it was on CE or POTD) an argument that I found persuasive. It went like this:

If there are lessons to be learned, it's because in the space of nine frighteningly short years Germany went from being a 'normal' state, a modern, European parliamentary democracy in which even minority citizens enjoyed civil rights, to descending into a genocidal dictatorship that attempted the physical extermination of an entire people. And at every step along that twisted road, it painstakingly used the state's bureaucratic and legislative machinery to systematically strip its minority citizens of every last one of the hard-won rights that they enjoyed including, ultimately, the right to life. And in carrying through this project, it enjoyed popular support from its own people.

So it's not because the victims were Jews. It's not because their suffering was supposedly unprecedented in history. Nor did they lose a greater proportion of their population than all other victims of genocide. Instead, it's because what happened to them is supposed to be unthinkable in a "civilized" modern state, and yet it still happened.

The trouble is, some lessons get learned and some lessons get forgotten. The obvious lesson is, "We can't ever let something like that happen here." But the lesson that all too often gets ignored is, "We can't let something like that happen anywhere." And the ones who miss the real point of Holocaust education by a full mile are those who favor one particular group so strongly, they're completely indifferent to whatever it does to another people.
