Hey.

So, I just recently got back into college after taking a hiatus for about a decade. I've been putting it off, but it's finally time to take my Academic Writing course. But I haven't written a paper in years, so I'm a bit rusty.

The assignment is to choose a news topic from the last 12 months, tie it to my major, and take (and defend) a position/thesis statement about the selected issue.

Now, my major is cybersecurity. And with the recent cyberattack Colonial Pipeline ransomware cyberattack, that seems like a topic ripe for exploration. I have a vague idea of the kinds of questions I'd like to explore on the matter. What are the costs of inadequate cybersecurity? What are the unintended consequences of capitulating to ransomware attacks? What action/regulations is/should the government pursue to mitigate damage to our infrastructure? What responsibilities should corporations/institutions responsible for such a significant portion of our country's ability to operate have with maintaining strong cybersecurity? What can be done to compel/incentivize them to strengthen their security?

And so on. I've got a lot of vague ideas, but I'm not sure how to apply them.

Thanks.

Copy and paste some bs, run it through Google translate, then paraphrase any mistakes, and you can write an essay in 2 hours.

I dunno. Seems pretty irresponsible. Probably violates academic integrity and what not.

What you have in terms of questions are enough to write hundreds of pages about. I'd say to pick one or two of those questions that complement each other, maybe the costs of inadequate security and then what the government and companies should do to prevent that damage.

Then if you have someone to talk to in person, just talk to them about those questions, see what they have questions about, see what you say, and then write that. You'd say a lot over the course of that conversation, all you have to do is just cover those things systematically in a word document. The key that unlocked my writing was to think in that quasi-conversational writing and then write would I would say in a more formal tone and with sources. That's academic writing in a nutshell.

I appreciate the response.

Like I said, I have a lot of general ideas of where I want to go with the paper, but I'm not very good at narrowing those down into a solid, concise position.

Introduce, Cite, Explain

every single paragraph of a research paper you need to introduce an aspect of your argument, cite a source that supports your argument, and then explain your reasoning. Follow that formula, sandwich it all between an intro and conclusion, and then follow the Purdue OWL website for citation formatting
