Those things were all over the place where I grew up. The residents of those areas know to stay away from them though. Only issue I ever had with them is when I played basketball outside the ball would sometimes roll into them and the cactus would attach to the ball.

I had that happen to me. My leg hurtled for 2 months where it stuck to me.
They dont jump out at you though. They usually get you because you unknowingly step on it and when you take another step it travels with you in your leg movement and if close enough it will go into the skin of your other leg. --- Genius, Thousandaire, Playboy, Philanthropist ... Crocs arent really appropriate footwear for hiking in the desert
