Jon Chu is the director (also directed Crazy Rich Asians) and Lin-Manuel Miranda is behind the music (dude behind Hamilton).

anyway, I was looking forward to its release last year, but due to covid, it's coming out next month.

currently at 98% on RT, btw.

I saw Hamilton in London and it was amazing, but I never got the chance to see In the Heights when it was performing. I hope the movie version does it justice, because the recording Disney released of Hamilton does not do it justice at all.

That's why it was so idiotic for people to call Hamilton the first "hip hop musical".

Honestly as a musical lover I can't really get into it. THe main tag song 96,000 is cool but the musicals of Linn lack the strong melodic hooks that drag me into others. As a composer I think he leaves something to be desired. I mean, hell, the rap from Into the Woods is more legit than some of the stuff I've heard. I dunno maybe I need to see them live, it usually changes my opinion. Definitely going to give this one a watch, we need more musical movies and we need more black people onscreen in musicals

That's how I feel about a lot of Lloyd Webber's work.

It was actually something he and his buddies made in college and he eventually transitioned it to Broadway. Put him on the theatre map after it won the Tony for Best Musical.

I hope the movie is better because the musical is just....fine I guess.

Yeah I like Jesus Christ Superstar and the rest I can't get into at all. Sondheim > Weber

Wicked is certainly one of the greatest shows. Meanwhile I'm still struggling to figure out what's so good about Phantom. Like.. it's a mess and it has a lot of boring songs.

I've never seen Wicked, even though when I first heard about it way back in like, 2007, I thought "wow what a cool idea, seeing things from the villain's perspective" which every media has done to death now. Don't know if I'd like it as much.

FWIW, (mild spoilers) Wicked completely retcons the wicked witch of the East into a non-villain. But honestly I think it's pretty solid even without the context of being a Wizard of Oz prequel. The music is fantastic and much of the plot stands on its own. Yes, in the end you need to know the basic plot points of Wizard of Oz, and there are of course some Easter eggs and stuff, but that's pretty much it. I consider it one of the best musicals and I don't think the whole villain's perspective gimmick affects that at all.

I haven't seen Maleficent either but after reading a summary I felt like Wicked was the basis for that movie's entire premise.

In Wicked's case, if I understand the plot right, I can definitely see the wizard as the bad guy especially if I'm thinking of the hammy James Franco version.

I'd still be interested in seeing it. But surprised that it didn't also go through the "making a Hollywood movie out of it" treatment like say Mamma Mia. Unless that cheesy 2013 Oz movie was meant to be that.

Just to be clear: Wicked is completely different and unrelated to the movie with James Franco and Mila Kunis.

People have been planning a Wicked movie for ages but it hasn't happened. Probably tons of different reasons but I can't say I'm sad about it, given the.. questionable quality of other classics live Phantom of the Opera and Les Mis.
