And nobody is quite sure why, as they are not tame to similarly sized animals. They are also remarkably easy to train, and supposedly make for better working animals than virtually any other domesticated animal besides dogs.

Apparently, the issue with domestication wasn't that they were hard to tame or weren't loyal to owners, but that they are very hard to breed in captivity.
Wow, I would not have guessed any of that. Thank you for the education, TC!

They probably have the harshest lives out of all the big kats. Not surprising they're open to living with a more successful provider/defender. This is pretty kool.

-They're one of the largest cats that can still purr.

-Their claws don't retract.

-They don't react to butt scratches the way smaller cats do.

-They don't stalk prey the same way other cats do.

Cheetahs have very specific prey animals, and tend to refuse to eat anything they didn't kill themselves (zoos regularly have trouble with this), so it seems likely that partial-domestication was as far as it could go. They weren't going to follow humans all over the planet like wolves did because they are so finely tuned to their habitat.

Yeah, even when stuff like lions and hyenas aren't actively out to kill them, they just roll up and steal their kills all the time, because, (IIRC) cheetahs actually have a pretty high rate of success on hunts.
Imagine running down a gazelle at 70 MPH and wearing yourself out so much you can't even eat your food right away because you need to catch your breath first, and some big jerks just roll up and steal your food and all you can do about it is run away and try again later.

Do they? I thought for Cheetahs it was the opposite. I remember watching a documentary about how they observed cheetahs starting to hunt in packs now because of that

The fact that they're so tame is about to make them extinct, thanks to rich assholes in the 20th and even the 21st centuries who care more about showing off than conserving the animal

The numbers, from a quick google search, range anywhere from 40 all the to 58% of hunts end in a successful kill, which is a significantly higher rate of success than most other predators on the savannah.
http://www.bbc.com/earth/story/20141104-the-truth-about-cheetahs
Here's an article about their hunting, which cites one study:
For a start, cheetahs have one of the most impressive kill stats of any carnivore. In 2012, she and her colleagues revealed that of 192 chases observed in the Serengeti over almost 20 years, 114 ended in a kill. That's a 58% success rate.
If you take out kills that get stolen(happened around 10% of the time), it comes to 48% of the time they take down their prey and get to eat it, which is pretty good.

I remember seeing a video of some dude on a safari, and the cheetah got into his car through the window, and was just chilling in the back seat, hanging out. No threat at all, he was just going for a ride. I didn't realize this was common behavior.

One thing tc neglected is that they are super anxiety ridden and nervous to the point where cheetahs in captivity often get a comfort dog (usually a dalmation).

Actually i think tc is at least partially incorrect. The dog is literally there in large part to bridge the gap between cheetahs and humans.
