In your opinion

Even if they do not act or say anything racist on the clock?

Saw this on the politics board and it was an explosion of different opinions

If they're a drone worker or doing something innocuous where their beliefs are least likely to affect their quality of work? No

If they're a manager or something public facing? Sure.

if you are racist at work or carry those beliefs to work, then yes.

same thing with drinking and smoking weed at home vs at work.

but you shouldn't be racist...

Depends how racist. If it's very blatant and discriminatory, yes. If it's a dumb remark and it's just people stretching it way beyond the original intent, no.

Only if they're actually racist.

Allow me to explain. So:

I, like many, entered the topic expecting

Rathinor posted...
Honestly, I expected something of an overreaction to some childish insult taken the wrong way

But no, that's racist as fuck

Instead I saw that what happened was absolutely disgusting.

For me there's not a fine line, but a big fat bold line between the difference.

No, and to an extent that goes to their activity outside of work

but if you post on FB/Twitter/speak in public spaces after hours and make it publicly known that you have certain views that can be classified as racist, don't get rattled when you boss decides to sever ties with you

why should people be fired from a job for what they do at home? Do you support communism or something?

If any employee's personal views become public, or if that employee interacts with people differently because of his personal views, then its just a smart business move to distance yourself from that person. Continuing to employ a known racist would be a bad pr move for most companies.

Firing them and not firing them both send a message, so I'm of the opinion that once it becomes known around the workplace that someone is racist, they should be let go for the sake of both customers and coworkers.

Generally yes.

If someone said something mildly racist 10 years ago on Facebook I wouldn't agree with a firing though.

There has to be some nuance. For example, my workplace would get shut down due to lack of people if they were fired for racist comments. I don't believe they are legitimately racist though.

It just depends. Where do they work? Did they actually do anything harmful? Whats the context? What are they making decisions on?
