The countrys largest nurses union is blasting the CDC over its latest recommended easing of mask restrictions claiming the move threatens the lives of patients, nurses and other frontline workers. Now is not the time to relax protective measures, and we are outraged that the CDC has done just that while we are still in the midst of the deadliest pandemic in a century, said registered nurse Bonnie Castillo, president of National Nurses United, which says it represents more than 170,000 members. The stinging remarks came just days after the federal Centers for Disease Control announced it was recommending that anyone who is fully vaccinated against COVID-19 can safely stop wearing masks and socially distancing in most instances. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Big Apple Mayor Bill de Blasio immediately balked at the notion, refusing to accept the updated guidance, at least for now adding to the confusion for people already struggling to figure out what they should be doing to stay safe. But Walensky doubled-down Sunday on her agencys stance, telling ABC-TVs This Week, We now have science that has really just evolved even in the last two weeks that demonstrates that these vaccines are safe. They are effective. They are working in the population just as they did in the clinical trials, she said. Asked separately on Fox News Sunday who would be the vaccination police to make sure people are properly complying with the guidance, Walensky said everyone should use the honor system.

Meanwhile, the nurses union also took issue with the fact that the CDC said it wont continue tracking people who are fully vaccinated and might get COVID-19 again unless the patients end up in the hospital or morgue. The agency said this would focus its resources better. This means that the CDC is no longer tracking data necessary to understand whether vaccines prevent asymptomatic/mild infections, how long vaccine protection may last, and to understand how variants impact vaccine protection, the union said in its statement.

these guys are experts, they clearly did account for what could happen. It seems odd to think they would not account for what Americans will do.

The CDC didn't relax protective measures because the CDC doesn't set protective measures to begin with.

I just hope the trend we're on of fewer and fewer cases per day will continue. Hopefully we get enough people vaccinated to make covid a minor concern.

Also, hopefully the vaccine protection lasts for a long time.

Considering that the nurses are the ones who have to deal with the consequences of the CDC's decision, of course they're going to be pissed.

Let's hope that we're all wrong that this will cause a spike in COVID cases and mutations.

And all we got was claps from people down the street when I walk home, random free shit from companies (for which we have a low chance of getting/never get ever) and hur dur thank you healthcare heroes

We can't do that.

We physicians and resident physicians do not have any political power whatsoever to be able to leverage this type of move.

Meanwhile the NP/PAs are leveraging/lobbying hard politically to get independent practice without physician supervision at no malpractice penalty

Do you want a PA with only 5% experience of a regular MD/DO to give you a colonoscopy? I wouldn't want that.

Actually, some are quitting, but many became "agency nurses".

Agency nurses actually pay a lot more. What they do is the agency would assign nurses where they are needed the most (in this case, places with many COVID cases, hotspots etc) and offer a surcharge for those hospitals, so the RN gets paid more. But this means they are going to have to travel across the country where ever the needs are.

Vaccinated people are quite safe, said Maria Glymour, an epidemiologist at the University of California, San Francisco. If you know everyones vaccinated, its OK. Id just worry that with a large group, you of course cannot know that.

this is such fucking stupid logic. everyone complaining about the CDC guidelines are talking about people who aren't following them. the CDC guidelines are super clear, and if people don't follow them, then of course it will be unsafe when they engage in riskier behaviors.
