Crash is too linear. Mario 64 should be kompared to Spyro, since both platformers are actually about exploring open levels.

A lot of great 2D platformers are linear.

Crash is a 2D platformer in 3D.

I actually agree, Mario 64 has aged horribly but Crash still plays great

This. I played it for the first time a couple months ago and was getting mad Donkey Kong Country vibes

Still begs the question Why single out Mario's first step into 3D gameplay, when left-to-right gaming had been done plenty of times before including by Mario himself. It's kinda like take a traditional turn-based RPG and going out of your way to match it against Final Fantasy Tactics.

It's better than Super Mario Sunshine though.

Crash Bandicoot is a shitty game, I remember when it first came out on ps1 it was so bad. I'd rather play Gex Enter thr Gecko any day of the week.

Crash is a far better platformer than any of the 3d Mario games. But I suppose you could argue that they are actually different genres.

Ehh I'm overall someone who prefers linear platformers than the collectathons but I think Mario Galaxy and 3D World are better than any Crash game and do that sort of thing even better.

They are both first-time efforts at making a 3D platformer

Mario 3D games feel more like a playground of creativity where the devs try to juggle different ideas (water cannon, magic hat, etc.).

Crash games are more about that hardcore linear platforming.

In what universe did Crash 1 age better than Mario 64. Crashs controls are way too stiff and its too hard.

Meanwhile I can play Mario 64 and have a blast still just jumping and diving around the fields of the castle because moving around itself is so much fun.

Yes the controls in Mario 64 are better, but the game itself is not.

Its a classic nostalgic game but it is very very dull.

SM64 has aged so well. Played it on Switch and it's top class

It's still such a joy to control Mario, what a feat for the mid-90s.

The colours still pop in a pleasing way, the only flaw is the dodgy camera

Crash 1 is a great game. Definitely my favorite in the N. Sane Trilogy - the only thing holding back the original for me was the no death requirement for gems (which was aggravating as fuck in some stages).

I would say these days I would be more inclined to play Crash 1 than SM64. I have pretty much every SM64 star memorized from watching speed runs, so the only way I really have that much fun is trying to engage in speed strats. If I was more interested in speed running though, I think SM64 would provide a LOT more fun. But Crash 1 has straightforward difficulty (without being excessive) and fun level design. My big criticism is that a couple levels are too long and the bridge levels are annoying.
