This. I never could do the butterfly one. EVERYTHING else I've done in the original release.

damn, I found that easy

Just avoid the red ones and grab the blue.

The floor around the blue ones are blue to guide you

Maybe it's a colorblind thing

weird, butterfly was easier for me than chocobo or lightning. it has less random factor, you just need to memorize the spawn.

Yeah, people were panicking at first when SE claimed the Adamantoise in FF15 would take 72 hours to defeat. I ended up killing it in about 15 minutes, which wasn't too bad.

In my opinion, the worst Final Fantasy boss is Yiazmat in FF12. It has 50 health bars, so it takes several hours to kill it.

Square Enix clearly likes doing crap like this to players lol.

Chocobo Catcher is probably the most infuriating minigame I've ever committed to beating, and I can't remember whether it was that or getting jump-KO'ed by a Great Malboro in that game that caused me to crack open my first PS2 controller against the wall. Thing about Chocobo Catcher is that all that grinding imprinted a fair amount of muscle memory; when I did a fresh playthrough a couple years later and tried Catcher again, I beat it on the first or second try.

The Butterfly game never reached the peak of Chocobo Catcher's rage-induction, but I also never ever reached a point of getting good at it the way I did Catcher - differentiating the color was never the issue for me, it's that the perspective / hit detection is so out of whack you have no room for deviance / error when attempting to skirt by the little bastards.

Lightning Dodging, on the other hand, was one of the very few RPG minigames where I tried it, looked at the requirements necessary to conquer it, and said 'nope, nuh-uh, fuck that, never gonna waste my time with this.' Even though it nagged at my completionist instinct, I knew I'd never be able to maintain the required level of concentration without choking. Like I said earlier, the one and only time I ever beat it was when I stumbled home drunk one night (and thus unburdened by my usual neuroses), and for some reason it got into my head that I should fire up the PS2 and try it.

Nah.

Lulu is benched by the time I'm gathering up the rare weapons, and I'm not a fan of completion's for completion's sake. I gave it a tepid attempt or two and then went on to focus on worthwhile crap.

I did it in 2016 (which was my 5th playthrough) and it took me about 2-3 weeks of just lightning dodging to get it done.

Typically people bitch about lightning dodge, chocobo race, and butterfly catch. But chocobo race you can typically get done in a few hours and butterflys are actually easy once you know the path, but when it comes to the lightning dodge you either dont fuck up for 20 mins or you start over

On the plus side you need to get LESS than 0

And the first time you win the race, it doesn't count even if you get less than zero. Also you'd have needed the upgraded mirror or else it doesn't matter anyway

So you could pretend you actually got exactly 0 and saved yourself the frustration of not getting the Sigil

I didn't struggle too much with any of the mini games for the Celestial weapons in FFX. I do recall the butterfly mini game being difficult in the PS2 days. But I played it recently on Steam and pretty sure I did it on the first or 2nd try. I'm wondering if it was just harder on a CRT TV or something, because when I was doing it, I kept thinking this isn't close to being hard. But yet I definitely remember it being somewhat difficult in the PS2 days. The chocobo mini game I could usually do within 5-10 attempts.

Done it genuinely on PS2 - once to 200 with No Encounters, and a couple of times to 50 or 100 without No Encounters (in challenge runs, to get the stat spheres on the first visit). Done it with the crater trick on PS3 - I just can't reliably dodge without that trick on the HD versions.

Yeah, Blitzball was one of those exceptionally rare instances in a FF game where the unholy level of grinding necessary to get / achieve something actually revolved around a fun minigame. The game itself was fairly janky, but I enjoyed the RPG aspects of recruiting and leveling my ragtag team of elite players. I also liked the free agent mechanic, and seeing how the set teams would gradually split apart and join other teams over the course of 100+ games (I also quickly learned the valuable lesson of never getting involved in Blitzball before getting the airship, lest your desired free agents get called up by another team before you've had a chance to recruit them in-world).

To be honest, I was always a slight bit melancholy whenever the Jupiter Sigil finally appeared, because it meant that I no longer had a good reason to keep playing Blitzball.
