All Saiyans are named after vegetables. In fact Saiya just reverses syllables for the Japanese word for vegetable (yasai).

It's just a silly naming scheme. Bulma's family is named after underwear (her actual name is Buruma/bloomers), Oolong and Yamcha are named after different kinds of tea, etc.

demon king Piccolo and his goons were musical instruments.
Namekians are slugs.
Hercule is Mr Satan outside US, and Videl is anagram of devil.
Frieza and his goons (including Saiyans) are refrigerator and all the things stores inside like fruits and vegetables. the elite force are dairy products (Ginyu force).
