Social media is just a symptom. Blaming it is stupid. It only reflects the quality of people on it.

Social media exposes it.

But also allows the idiots to get exposed to other idiots with no filter, and via the thunking of "well, if a bunch of the people I know say X, well then that is likely to be true."

Instead of listening to 1 proven expert, they know 2 Jim Bobs who disagree.

In other words: The basics of what people want is fine. They just don't know how to get there. They know they want to get to a tropical island paradise, they just have no clue how to build or fly the plane... or even choose the people who can do those things.
