You: "Donald Trump told people to inject disinfectant!!!!"
Me (Chad): "Where?"
You: *Posts video of Trump talking to a physician about effects of sunlight and disinfectant on the virus and how they might be used in the body, that medical doctors are "looking into", and never tells anyone to do anything*
Me (big brain): But Trump didn't tell anyone to do anything in that video
You (seething): GET LOST TROLL

So is this what the kids call gaslighting?

Donald Trump literally talks like a mob boss giving himself plausible deniability and keeping up his legitimate businessman act. And people somehow buy that shit.

And you are saying that others are misrepresenting the video? This comment makes it seem like Trump sat down to have a conversation with a doctor about treatments, not Trump giving a rambling press conference that is designed to share information with the general public.

Probably not. Even if it's legal, it'd be like showing up drunk to work. It's not a good image still. What you do in your own time is fine, but professional decorum is always going to be a thing.

Then again, Trump was probably liquored up half the damn time he gave press conferences, so who knows?

This isn't a good example to use if you're defending Trump and his administration. Trump's Press Secretary at the time Sean Spicer came out the next day trying to convince people that Covfefe had a secret meaning that certain people will understand. It's another "The Onion wouldn't be able to make up a story this ridiculous" story from Trump.

I didn't mean to make it sound like that; it is indeed a rambling press conference. However, he never suggest to the public that they should start injecting disinfectant. He does indeed converse with a physician, and repeatedly confirms with her that they are going to "test" and "check" the effects of disinfectant and UV light on the body. And again near the end he clarifies that they are "going to have to use medical doctors" in order to check/test these things.

Right. He didn't suggest people should inject disinfectants into their body. He was just wondering if it would be a good idea or not. The point is that every kindergartener in America can tell you that it's a horrible idea. The next day, by the way, he claimed that he was CLEARLY being sarcastic here. It was just a joke to inject disinfectants. And after this event he canceled coronavirus briefings for a few months out of embarrassment.

It's all made worse that Dr Birx had no choice but to pretend in her reaction to him that it's not a completely unreasonable idea. Both her and Fauci have discussed at length in recent months how they had to tiptoe around contradicting any of the ridiculous things Trump was saying, or else feel his wrath. Which we obviously saw toward the end of 2020 when Trump was very outright smearing Fauci. The disinfectant injection thing is just a quintessential example of the clusterfuck of a Covid response under Trump.

He was directly talking to Dr. Birx wanting her approval of his crazy idea. Watch her reaction. She was in disbelief over how someone could be that stupid to suggest such a thing.

He later said he was joking about it after the massive backlash he received.

And people did in fact drink bleach after his comments. Calls to poison control and hospitalizations rose sharply from toxic chemical exposure immediately afterwards.

Trump supporters are straight-up out of 1984.

Trump says dumb, crazy, scary, patently false things. Full stop. That's it. There's nothing more to it than that.

I never shook the feeling he didn't really understand the effect he was having to the full extent. I think he was calculating on a certain level, but the bleach injection thing makes no sense on any level, since he had to know by that point that:

1) Liberals were skeptical of him, even putting him under a microscope, and would mistrust anything he said immediately (not for bad reasons)
2) If anyone did actually follow his suggestions, the only people who would likely follow his joke of a suggestion would be conservatives, the people who liked him. So poisoning your own followers is just dumb.

It felt more like a stupid off the cuff remark that he had no grasp of. Not defending or justifying it, because for fucks sake, this was the president of the United States, but it always felt like he just didn't know better. There is other stuff he said/didn't say that was more damaging, like the "good people both sides" thing, not wearing a mask, and confusing the fuck out of the COVID response with overly optimistic/outright false information.

Stupid off the cuff remarks on subjects for which he has no grasp are pretty much Trump's entire presidency in a nutshell.

This is a man who has literally only one strategy to anything, which is to keep talking until people turn the cameras off. It's basically fire hosing in human form.

And what's funny is, compounded with his complete lack of knowledge about basically anything, is the fact that nearly every expert around him is fired or resigns within months, so he never even has a consistent source of information, nor does he listen to them anyway.

Which makes it all the more hilariously ironic that his fans actually believe he's always several steps ahead of everyone else. The man is so ignorant and incompetent, he sort of loops around and convinces people that he's brilliant.

He was definitely unqualified for his job, solely based on his character. If it wasn't for the fact that he was actually fairly methodical about energizing the alt-right, I would believe he was just a spoiled rich brat lacking self-awareness. He is a spoiled rich brat lacking self-awareness, but nothing is ever enough for him. It's a great quality for a selfish bastard, bad for leadership.

I honestly don't think he did anything to energize the base, instead he was the useful idiot for a very clear, highly organized misinformation campaign that was eagerly capitalized upon by a small group of very influential hyperpartisan conservative media outlets.

It was the perfect storm of stupidity for people like Roger Stone and Steve Bannon.

The fascists made a power play, using a candidate they thought they could legislate through. Unfortunately for them, his ego/persona was surpassed only by his incompetence.

In retrospect, I suspect the answer to a lot of questions can be found with Rudy Giuliani's contacts.
