Conkeldur is absolutely a reference to Machamp. Not only are they 3 stage, and trade evo. You catch them in similar stages of their respective games. There is definitely tons in gen 5. Trubbish and Grimer, Pidove and Pidgey, there was an electric mouse, Sawk and Throh for Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan. I mean come on, it's written on the wall.

I agree with that, the elemental apes for instance had no gen 1 equivalent.

Catching Timbur at that stage in the game fills the same fighting role Machop would have filled in Gen 1. Like you said, every game has a trash bird and normal rodent (rattata/bidoff). The first 3 stage fighting trade evolution was Machamp, so yeah, it gets compared in the same way Pikachu gets compared to every electric mouse.

Gen 5 made 150 pokemon and didnt reuse any so the role of pokemon you get early and incentivises trades definitely needed to be filled and those pokemon in gen 1 were geodude and abra, machop you cant even get untill after your third badge so I wouldnt even say timbur's placement is a reference to machop

conkeldur is a machamp reference in that he is a fighting trade evo (timburr doesnt even evolve at level 25), not much else, there are 700 pokemon, there are gonna be a ton of similarities

and btw I absolutely agree that there are a lot of gen 1 references in the games especially starting with 5 (6 is where it got egregious for me personally) I just think that to call golem and conkeldor mirrors or references is a stretch unless any fighting trade evo made from now on is a machamp reference and any rock trade a golem reference, I just dont think they have much in common.

The biggest reference of all is Munna which is quite literally a gen 1 callback. I posted the screen cap a few pages back. Of course Zeus completely ignored that part and left it out of his response to me, because it completely destroys his arguments.

I also mentioned earlier that gen 5 is really when the Kanto pandering started yes. It continued later on with whatever gimmicks the region had being an excuse to fanservice Kanto (megas etc). Then you had Let's Go. But what I'm talking about specifically with gen 5 is how the dex was actually constructed with the amount of gen 1 knockoffs, apart from the normal staples you get in every region. They even reset the Routes so it was literally starting over like in Pallet Town with Route 1. Later regions did this but Unova set the precedent, and those others didn't have the same dex restriction. The whole BW game was deliberately setup by the designers to play like the first gen experience.

If you were around in gen 5 itself you'd know it was this that was the big controversy of the gen. People thought it was very unimaginative to have all these Kanto 2.0 mons in a dex, and this was compounded by the fact you couldn't use any other regions Pokemon at all in the main game. A fact Zeus continues to ignore and even apparently didn't know of. Which is why he's not to be taken seriously and I'm not responding to him again in here.
