Theres some merging to be said about am having a gravesite

A family friend died when I was away and I was never able to go to their funeral or anything like that. And they were cremated, so theres nothing I can ever do to remember them outside of my own thoughts.

I don't see any free option, and it doesn't address the fact that they can easily be bypassed. Again, my sister had a will. It was on file. She was cremated anyway, because that's what my mother wanted. Without someone willing to fight it, the hospital isn't taking your family to court to uphold a directive. At least not around here. lol

My sister wanted to be given to a body farm.
You get it free from those who have it. Doctor, hospital, insurance company. I got it free from my credit union.

Choose an executor who is good friend, spouse, attorney, etc. to carry it out. It doesn't sound like your family members would be a good choice to be an executor. People have their last wishes carried out every day. Just because your family failed to carry your sisters out doesn't mean that has to be the way. Honestly, (assuming her last wishes were spelled out legally) I'm not sure why anyone didn't contest what happened. Legally it's open and shut and it was her last wishes.

By law your last wishes must be carried out when legally articulated. NOLO Press has books on doing this free too. You may have a lot of work ahead of you to make sure your wishes are carried out but free forms are out there.

Ummm...you can still have a niche if you are cremated. We have one for my dad, although my mom may want to move him to another so she can have a spot next to him (she initially wanted to be buried, but after seeing how much cheaper cremation is, she thinks its the way to go).

And with niches you still have a shelf to put flowers or other items on.

Eh its not the same. I dont even know where the ashes are.

Its pretty obvious why people want to be buried. Its more than just religion.

To be clear, I'm in no way speaking for anyone but myself and my situation. I at no point suggested that no one has their wishes carried out. But for me, I have no friends, no spouse, and no money(for an executor/attorney that would carry out my wishes, which is what can't afford), so what happens to me will fall to my family. And they will do what they will do.

As an aside, funeral poverty is actually a thing that's gotten more scrutiny as the pandemic went on. Tl;dr, the industry is a fucking racket.

That doesn't surprise me much. It's not really a necessity that you expect to utilize immediately, and the natural ebb of life and death probably has some slow periods, since the general goal of most people's lives is to live as long as possible.

Plus it's really not your problem. If you die without considerations for your burial, it's going to more or less happen somehow (cremation, potter's field) because it's a public health issue.

I recall there was a cemetery near where I live where they did something like that, except a flood happened and washed up the remains and scared the piss out of a whole bunch of people.
