I usually go to restaurants alone. I can't really imagine spending a lot of time at a bar. I can finish a drink quickly.

I get confused with this too. I used to go to clubs because there was dancing. I think this is why bars have games, like pool, darts, or shuffleboard. But those are fun bars, going to like a tap room or whatever, usually it's just sit at a bar and watch sports on TV. Also, those games are more welcoming to groups.

It really seems that if you don't have a big group of friends to migrate with, you are out of luck in terms of meeting people or making friends to go out with.

I would sing Karaoke. You could also try chatting with the bartender and other people. Maybe play pool or something.
