I don't think reviews or awards are a be-all end-all barometer for movie quality, but the BP nominees are usually a good list of movies to check out.

Truth be told the Academy members vote on who gets to win each year. Unfortunately, you're lucky if even 50% of the Academy members have even watched the movie so it's pretty accurate to say the voting is completely political and pretentious.
