Imagine losing multiple jobs over this and an employer not telling her why.

Was going to make a joke about people like her being the reason Blockbuster went out of business, but she actually lost several jobs potentially by having that charge on her record according to the article. That's ridiculous.

Attorney Ed Blau with Blau Law Firm says McBride will need to have the case expunged in order to clear her record.

essentially means that she's no longer got an arrest warrant out for her, but she's still fucked if someone looks up her criminal record.

When I was a teenager I got a phone call from a video rental store not far from my home to remind me to return Resident Evil 2.

I didn't understand because I never rented that game. They sort of got confrontational about it. They called a few more times. It turns out someone used my name and phone number to rent it. I never figured out 100% who it was but I have suspicions. IIRC you needed a password to rent from that place but they didn't always ask for it for some reason.

I always assumed that if things ended up getting really serious I would just go in person and ask them to check the security recording or something to prove that it wasn't me.

Anyway at some point I never heard back from them and the whole thing died down. The store closed down a couple of years later. It was a big chain store too (Super Club Videotron) so I assume they were probably insured against this kind of thing.

I wonder what would've happened if I had been in the US.

I used to rent videos from a Network Video franchise. All they ever asked for was your phone number. No ID. It seemed insecure.
