Massive spoilers for the movie in this post!

I thought it was mostly trash, with a few good parts here and there.

I really enjoyed the few fatalities we got, especially the Kung Lao one. It's a classic from the game. But they happened so rarely that they almost felt like they were from a different movie and tacked on. There really needed to be more of them.

My mind got kinda blown when fucking Nitara of all character appeared. I love her and she looked cool and all, but yeah, I just didn't think they'd go that deep.

Goro being a random goon was kinda weird.

Actor wise, there were some good choices, and some bad ones. Liu Kang was baby faced, yeah, but damn he was ripped. I was actually kinda happy with him. Kung Lao looked like Kung Lao, and I liked his appearance. Jax was fine. Sub-zero was good, though his mask sucked. It didn't fit him. They needed to make it look more like the video game, also there was no blue! Everything was so black, I barely recognized it was him when they first showed him. Scorpion was a good actor, but they were too afraid to make him look like Scorpion at the end. His eyes needed to be all white, but they weren't, and again, the bad mask.

Sonya was SUPER damn hot. I mean geez she was hot. Probably the best live action Sonya, just behind the turbo hot one from MK: Annihilation.

Cole was pointless. They didn't need him. Could have centered the movie around someone else.

They turned Raiden from a 7 foot tall god into a wispy manlet. Rly gud job gais.

Shang sung was an okay actor but I get the feeling the direction was all wrong. He looked the part, but acted more like the Emperor than a wily sorcerer.

Kano was hilarious.

And of course, the most disappointing part of the entire movie, Mileena. A three part failure:

1) The actress looks nothing like Mileena (although she was pretty hot and has a great body).

2) The outfit looks nothing like Mileena (where is the pink?), and the mouth was cheaply done. Just splashed some red paint on her cheeks for the whole movie, then a few seconds before she dies they quickly show her mouth open. Great way to waste the character!

3) The way the character was written and directed was completely wrong. Mileena is one of the most feral, bat-shit crazy characters in the entire MK universe, that's what makes her so amazing. She's fucking nuts. An abomination of life. She's the Joker of the MK world. She should be prancing about and ripping through throats. Instead, she was a silent, characterless goon for the Emperor--I mean Shang Sung. What a disappointment.

As far as the fighting, it was some decent fighting, but at this point in my life I want something elevated and special for MK live action fighting. I want to be stunned and amazed. I want long shots, and wild camera tricks, and game style X-ray shots of bones getting broken and organs getting smashed. I wanted something kinda mind blowing, and we just got some okay fight choreography, with a few CGI fireballs and iceballs thrown in here and there. If they can't go all the way and deliver something game-changing I'm kinda not interested.

But beyond that, I just feel disappointed because the first Mortal Kombat actually has so much opportunity to do some really fascinating things, and instead the movie is just a jumble of super hero stuff. I feel like my perfect Mortal Kombat movie would go back to being dark and moody and atmospheric. A fighting tournament on a creepy, dark island, with a maddened wizard as the host, and all kinds of interesting, high tense conversations and build ups between rivals. There's a lot of character in that first game, you know? Lots of space for characters to breathe and move and stretch, lots of mystery, lots of intrigue could be had. But instead we just got a breakneck Marvel style movie without the Marvel style production.

I kind of agree with alot of this. Movie just felt so meh. I loved the sweep moves, the original mk combo. Did I miss Kabal take his mask off or did they just not do it

I also thought I had it nailed that Cole Young was Kuai Liang, the second Sub-Zero, but I was wrong. Cole's the descendant of Scorpion and a pure OC.

Which at the end of the day is no problem for me. It's not like we needed another movie where Liu Kang is the main character and kills Shang Tsung and the end. We had that already. This is different.

It's also very clearly just a first chapter.

Yeah? Well I had chicken parm for dinner last night and I'll happily have it again tomorrow night.

Good movie imo. Some weird casting decisions though. Shang Tsung fucking sucked, Sonya was meh, Kabal was whatever. But the rest were pretty good. The CGI was surprisingly good. Fight scenes were awesome. I would have taken out the MMA fight scene tho.

Some of the editing was weird. There were stunts that were either cut off too early or began too late. Some really weird jump cuts throughout. It felt like a bad 90s movie at times but that also seems kinda okay for this movie. Overall I enjoyed it and I hope WB pursues the franchise with a higher budget and more talent behind it.

Lol I also forgot about Raiden. He sucked too.

Raiden's eyes looked like bollywood CGI. Good movie tho. Hope they bring Kano back to life for the sequel.

I didn't really like that Sonya's character arc was "I wanna be special" and then it's resolved with "Okay I killed Kano I'm special now yay." Putting that on the only female hero of the team, too, it just kinda puts the scenes where the good guys tell Sonya "Okay you sit this training out because you're not special" in a weird context.

I actually thought it was kinda refreshing that they gave that character arc to the girl. So often these days they just make the girl super bad ass and kick everyone's ass without question, it's nice to see her be an underdog.

So I finally watched it aaaand yall were right. It isnt that bad and i actually get the direction they were going with. The tattoos are basically the chosen ones by the player. So it's like selecting your fighter. Cole being a descendant of scorpion wasnt so bad. the only thing about cole honestly is that I didn't like his power. It was pretty stupid. Personally they should just drop the suit and have given him tonfas. feel that would have worked out better. Shang Tsung was bland and I didn't care for his black eyes. Should have jsut done a green hue with some kind of vapor instead so it seems like he is powering up with souls.

So about kane, I really really liked him and he saved the movie for me honestly. I like show he wa ethe first one to get his powers from training. made him really seem like a threat. Oh and he was obviously a bad guy the entire time, he was just paid to be a good guy. Which makes perfect sense, as he is a mercenary. For his fight with Sonya. I thought it was really good. I also think I get why the mark left him. It isn't because he was dead but because he was no longer considered a earth warrior and was now part of the outworld side.

Sonya's story was very well done and I like that she was kicking ass even though she wasn't even a chosen one. She fought her way into becoming one. thought it was a great arc.

So far really the only complaints is that the villains were very very bland, besides subby wubby, kano, and kabal. Everyone else was forgettable and natara was a joke. feel they could have done more with goro. reiko would have been better if they went with MK4 instead of armageddon. Hell should have done the MK4 ending in a later movie. oh and the music sucked, though I did like the mortal kombat remix in the credits.

But overall I give it a 7/10 and I appreciate what they were trying to accomplish. Only thing is that it feels like this was made by someone who got into motal kombat late and was trying to do research on the characters. They did a good enough job but it wasnt made by a diehard fan from the beginning. But I do appreciate then for giving it a shot and at least researching the characters. Can't wait for the sequel honestly. Hopefully it isn't annihilation bad lol

I hadn't really thought about it, but the fights seemed brief in this one. I think the MMA fight between Cole and that one guy went longer than most of the fights involving actual Mortal Kombat characters.

People say that Goro was misused in this movie, but I think he had the best fight almost by default. His was the only battle other than Sonya versus Kano which went on long enough to tell a story.

I honestly dont mind Cole Young the character. I kept thinking that he's Takeda, only to remember that Takeda is actually Kenshi's son, not a descendant of Scorpion. Who knows, maybe they are going to recon Cole as being Takeda in the sequel. ANYWAY, yeah his power sucks. I dont mind the Goro's fight, but what the fuck is Cole's power? Literally plot armor??

Mileena didnt feel like Mileena. Someone else perfectly described this sentiment at the first page

No Kano's cannonball? I must be tripping but I didnt see his cannonball. Also the way Kano got his eye laser power is dumb as fuck to me. I thought the whole bionic eye was a built in cybernetic eye implant anyway. What the fuck is this whole arcana bull?

Nitara...nuff said. Everything about Nitara. Reiko had a better showing than her

Liu Kang look too babyface to me.

Okay this is probably the biggest nitpick but...is it just me or was Jackson Briggs not as big as he should be?

EDIT: I wanted to learn more about Kabal's beef with Kano. They referenced Black Dragon but it wasnt as detailed as I hope

Lin Kuei is the faction of Chinese assassins that Sub-Zero represents. I guess they didn't explain that in the movie, did they? :/

Yeah we got it 20+ years ago.. movie production is so much more advanced now, i would be all for a rehash of the original story

There was an animated movie released a while ago, called Scorpion's Revenge that was pretty much a rehash of the original story, just with more Scorpion focus.

As for the movie, it was aight.
