He was changed to her dad for the western and xbox versions (papa Nier) because Squeenix thought it would sell better in those markets. The gameplay in Nier has been retooled to use the Automata engine, but it's still fundamentally a simpler experience. No hacking or anything like that and your "Pod" abilities are more straightforward spells. In terms of dragging on, the original was known for being a bit tedious with side quests and grinding for weapon upgrade materials, but supposedly that's by design because Yoko Taro wanted you to feel that doing sidequests was a waste of valuable time or something.
