Free speech extends to every government agency. That includes police departments. They fired him for showing political support to a controversial figure. Unless there is some rule against donating to defense funds, which I doubt, its pretty clear they fired him because of who he supports.

Assuming this isn't a tiny small town department, they most likely have lawyers, and know whether or not they have grounds to fire him.

You say that but these.kind of lawsuits happen all the time.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

It doesn't. Mind you, I have no doubt he is biased and racist, but this doesn't legally prove it, especially when the trial hasn't happened. I'd say the same thing if he donated to Chauvin, and you know I don't support that shit.

I'm suggesting that, given the power of Police Unions, that most departments won't fire an officer without knowing whether or not they can legally do so.

He has a right to free speech. That extends to actions and showing support. Because this was clearly done because of who he supported rather than a policy banning supporting defense funds or anything similar, this is a clear violation.

It's not being contrarian. I don't like seeing people get condemned unjustly. I'm pretty consistent about taking up stances and holding to my values even when I dislike the person, which is so much the case for Rittenhouse.

And in this case, I'm not even defending Rittenhouse.

His egregious comments erode the trust between the Norfolk Police Department and those they are sworn to serve. Reports were made that he donated and expressed support for the actions of Kyle Rittenhouse.

Donation aside, barging around the police station going YEEHAW, KYLE IS A GODDAMN MAN AND IT'S OUR DUTY TO DEFEND PEOPLE LIKE HIM is absolutely a fire-able offense.

Sorry, i missed this.

It shows bias towards Rittenhouse, it does show any bias that would make him unable to do his job. For anything to violate constitutional rights you have to make a clear showing of how it was interfering with his ability to do his job.

Very weird for the article to not include the donation message which is much more damning than the fact there was a donation

from the New York posts article on this

The donation reportedly came with a comment: God bless. Thank you for your courage. Keep your head up. Youve done nothing wrong.
Every rank and file police officer supports you, the message continued. Dont be discouraged by actions of the political class of law enforcement leadership.

Which makes the firing a lot more understandable imo

It would be. It's one thing saying you support their actions, or that you think they're guilty but want them to get off, but far as I can tell he didn't cross that line. Though idk what comments he actually made, so that could completely change my stance.
