Watching the best of the best play each other on a regular basis would be awesome. As soccer is now it's all Busch league shit.

Literally already happens.

That's what the champion's league is.
We haven't had an underdog story since both porto and monaco faced off in the 2004 final or when borussia dortmund beat juventus in 1997

I think it's a terrible idea, done purely for money, and I hope it flops. I think it will actually, given the opposition from many groups (governments, UEFA/FIFA, football associations, fans, possibly players and managers, and Sky), who can all apply serious pressure, and the few potential issues I can see.

But will anyone care about Argentina without Messi or Portugal without Ronaldo?
What are the prospects of players jumping ship so they can still play for their country? That's assuming UEFA/FIFA go down this route, which they may decide is too nuclear an option.

As a Scot, it'd be a shame if Tierney, Robertson and McTominay missed out on Scotland's first tournament finals since 1998. It'd obviously be a bigger loss for those players than Messi/Ronaldo. Do they prioritize club or country?

Oh. . . soccer. . .

That's just what the sport is called in the USA. Everyone else calls it the by the proper name of football, it being an old sport played with feet using a ball.

Spurs score a last minute goal against Barcelona, earning a shock point and moving from 15th to 14th in the table.

It's the stuff dreams are made of.

Most of them will simply go after the money.

I meant to mention the contracts in my post.

I have no clue about contract law or what the contracts say. Could the clubs be breaking the contracts by doing this (e.g. if they specify any competitions)? I imagine they have accounted for this in the contracts, so I doubt it.

Also, did I hear right that this isn't meant to be happening until 2024 (edit: apparently not)? Many will be out of contract by then, and some much sooner than that, if they refuse to renew before then.

There's no official date set yet. Florentino Perez did say the Champions League reforms of 2024 wouldn't come soon enough, so at least before that is the goal.

Not 100% true. In Austrailia they use the term. their National team is called the Socceroos.

Anyways, I think this is a bad idea. Soccer in most countries is run more capitalisticly than any US sport could dream of, which has its fair share of issues(such as two teams winning the scottish league every year just about for the last century, and three teams in Portugal winning almost every year for the last 84), but this is like a slap in the face in this already unbalanced, capitalistic culture. It's teams with a lot of money(not necessarily quality) wanting to make even more money by secluding themselves off from everybody else and making their own competition. I'm not a fan of it, and I hope the teams get punished for it. The highest honor in the sport now isn't going to be winning your domestic league(wherein you can be relegated if you don't play well), or the Champions League(reward for finishing in a top spot in your league, has group stages and knockout rounds). It's going to be this, because this could be where all the top talent congregates. But winning this super league should feel hollow in a way, and not a celebrated achievement.
