At an Amazon Warehouse of all places

like seriously.... WTF?

This clown is Stanford University educated and once upon a time he made big money at a tech startup yet now.... hes making barely above minimum wage as a warehouse worker?

How exactly does this happen? The dude cant get Google, Facebook, Microsoft, or any other tech company to pick him up?

I hate working with overqualified people like this because their head is so big that they think theyre better than everyone in the place

you don't simply "get picked up" by a fortune 500 company for any position other than bottom of the barrel

depends on the IT job

you can learn programming from a uni fairly well. database design and development as well. They can teach with web development, but the fundamentals of it rather than whatever flavor of the month framework is popular at the moment. unis often have networking degrees as well which are similar to a CCNA but more vendor agnostic

with your compsci and programming knowledge you can branch out into almost any IT niche as programming skills are almost universally helpful.

They can pay an immigrant to do it cheaper. 7 out of the top 10 companies that use H-1B visas are tech companies like Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook, etc. Why do you think they wanted Trump and his ban gone so badly? Haha, are people really this clueless?

He didnt have something lined up when the tech startup went down and its harder to get a job once youve been unemployed for a while?

While he is well educated, he cant apply that education in a work environment? The question of what did you accomplish in your last job?

The work he is capable of doing is being offshored? My husband works in AI and coding is done offshore. He is much more likely to hire someone with a high level math degree to work on his stuff because anyone can do coding, not just anyone can come up with algorithms.

There are many reasons.

My brother does data science for a big tech company. He has a PhD in genetics. And worked several data science jobs prior to this. My sense is that it is very competitive.

When I worked in a video game store, there was a full time employee who had a postgraduate degree in a STEM subject. He seems pretty happy there. I'm pretty sure he's still working there. Wtf.

Just out of interest, his postgrad degree was in geology. That IS a STEM subject?

Pardon me, but I just had to have another chuckle at this topic. These Americans truly get what they deserve at this point. But hey, its a small price to pay for ending fascism. Oh, and Biden will most certainly increase the number of foreign work visas for these companies so tell your wagie friend to hold onto that pee bottle. HohohoHOHOHAHAHA!

Also I saw a docu on TV about this engineering grad who couldn't find a job... It was so depressing. It's not that uncommon, some people fall through cracks and there are still cracks at the university level.

he probably had a niche job or it was through a risky startup that doesn't translate well to other jobs. also if he's a prima donna other potential employers may pick up on that and not hire him.

Maybe just maybe that's why no one liked working with them and why they didnt hire them.

Or perhaps as others said, maybe they got tired of doing the job and were looking for something "easier"?

Worked in IT in the past, and I won't be doing it again because the industry sucks ass. Shit like Amazon is pretty much the options I'd have left, unless I can make my own game to sell or something (I have the coding skills, but not a lot of the other things that are needed, in particular graphics design skills).

(I should note "in the past" ended very recently - as in, last couple of weeks - so I haven't actually decided on my next move just yet.)
