What a fucking joke. I'll still use the website thanks to bypass paywalls, but I guess I'll have to ditch the phone app. Too bad.

We absolutely need an alternate method of funding journalism. This is a tragedy of the commons situation with information and truth at stake.

The problem is once you introduce the concept of state funded journalism you open a can of worms that can never ever be closed.

Journalism has to remain private. What we need to do is regulate low quality information so that it can't be as prolific.

Sadly some people will pay for it and start a new scummy way for people to put more websites behind a paywall.

I don't approve of state funded media either. But there needs to be someone investigating wrongdoing and publishing high quality information that helps people make sense of the world. And the marketplace simply can't seem to value that correctly. An informed citizenry doesn't necessarily endlessly raise stock prices.

So there needs to be a community centered, not-for-profit model or the private model needs to somehow be subsidized without giving undue control to the subsidizer. The current path is absolutely unsustainable.

That's what traditional advertising used to be.

By low quality I essentially meant opinions, speculation, live interviews, etc. High Quality Journalism should be about well researched facts not opinions.
