They've got what is perhaps the best combat system in any JRPG period, and the story's pretty good too.

The original Xillia has worse combat than a few of the older 3D Tales that came before it like Vesperia and even Innocence R and Hearts R. Xillia 2's combat is pretty great though.

i liked Xillia's combat, but i played as Jude.

got really good at that dodge counter.

never got around to playing 2. i should find a ps3 again maybe and play it

I quit X2 because they wouldn't allow you to grind. What I mean by that is once you make your payment for the chapter any time you have any money at all the game is like "WHERE MONEY" after every single loading screen and while you don't have to give them anything, continuing to have money results in that payment screen every. fucking. time.

X2 really sucks

that said I have only played tales games as multiplayer an it seems particularly unsuited to multiplayer. I don't think the story would be any better regardless of how many people you play with though

Zillia 1 is neat except vs bosses, then it breaks down immediately

Zillia 2 has the best tales combat period, although the MC trivializes a lot of stuff.

Not to be contrary, but those were actually two of my least favorite RPGs Ive ever played and thats my favorite type of game. I couldnt stand the combat. The second game was one of the most depressing things Ive ever played. I dont think I could be paid to replay those games, in fact.

Im genuinely surprised that so many people like this game. They explain the combat one time and then you can never view the explanation again. Also, you literally have your money garnished in the second game. I dont know how they thought that would be a fun mechanic.

Isn't it one of the bad tales games? I heard that after vesperia, only berseria was any good and the rest ranged from mediocre to straight up awful

Xillia 1+2 are probably my favorite tales games.

You heard wrong. Vesperia is one of the best, but so is original Symphonia and Destiny PS2 Remake and few others are good at the least. Original Xillia is goodish at best and mostly mediocre, Xillia 2 is mostly better, has better content, variety and combat, but recycles a lot of assets and has a few annoying, intrusive mechanics that at least can be tolerated. Xillia 2's story is more flawed, but original Xillia's story isn't that good either(Zestiria actually does the whole conversing with spirits thing better than the Xillia games for example), so Xillia 2's story is not really as much of a step down, as it is one to the side.

I really enjoyed the first xillia. Never got around to poaying the 2nd and now my ps3 is completely dead (it couldn't read discs for the longest time but now it just wont start).

I used to think Tales of Xillia 2 was hard, and then I set every party member that wasn't Ludger to do nothing and basically just be Ludger's cheerleader. And tbh I actually kind of hate that part of Xillia 2's combat, you're actually better off just soloing every boss as Ludger because letting the AI party members pretend that they're useful just gets you smacked. I like the combo potential that Xillia 2 has to offer, but bosses don't feel as much like a collaborative effort between all of your party members, and I don't really like that because what's even the point of having a party at that point?

Not only that, but making the entire main plot revolve around Ludger and his family while leaving most of the Xillia 1 cast's character development, and even the initial plot hook surrounding a terrorist group that wants to sabotage the growing relations between Rieze Maxia and Elympios in side quests. Like, straight up, that just makes the story feel like bad fanfiction. It barely even feels like a continuation of Xillia 1's story. Just...disappointing.

Didn't realize 2 was looked down on this much, I thought 2 took everything that was good about 1 and enhanced it (speaking about combat only, the stories are both kinda meh IMO although I did like 1's better)

Not bad. Just mediocre and nothing special. Almost nobody brings up the Xillia games anymore because theyre forgettable.

You are correct in that after Vesperia, the Tales series did not produce any games worth playing aside from maybe Berseria. This is why so many people are holding out for Arise. It desperately needs to revive the franchise.

Xillia 2 has some considerable flaws, but objectively it is a better game than the original Xillia, especially where it really matters.
