That was a big thing for a while, and seemed like an actual good idea. For a while severs would ask if I wanted a straw, or restaurants changed to paper straws, but now everywhere I go I get a plastic straw without being asked like nothing ever changed.

whenever i go to mcdonalds, there is a sign saying straws are bad, and should be avoided

Went from plastic straws wrapped in paper to paper straws wrapped in plastic.

There was some backlash from the disabled community about some alternatives (paper or metal straws) not being a viable solution for them. That added in with the lefts general principle that individual consumer choices arent going to be enough to combat ocean pollution, and that half of the plastic waste in the ocean today is from fishing nets, dampened support for the ban plastic straws movement.

That new Seaspiracy documentary on Netflix points out that industrial fishing kills like 250 times as many seaturtles a year as plastic straws, so that might put the final nail in the coffin on that.
