EXCLUSIVE: Following the confirmation at the Disney Investors Presentation in December that the next film was a go, Lucasfilm and director James Mangold look to have their sights set on Harrison Fords first new co-star in the next installment of the Indiana Jones franchise. Sources tell Deadline that Phoebe Waller-Bridge is set to co-star opposite Ford in the fifth installment, with Ford returning as everyones favorite fedora-wearing, whip-slinging archaeologist.

Mangold is taking over directing reins from Steven Spielberg, who is still serving as a producer and is very much involved in various elements of the film. Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall and Simon Emanuel will join Spielberg as producers. John Williams, who has worked on every score in the franchise including its iconic theme, will also return as composer.

<img src="https://deadline.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/thumbnail_GettyImages-1164567363C-e1617927703972.jpeg?w=681&h=383&crop=1">

The hope is to start production this summer, with Mangold meeting with other talent for other roles in preparation for production. Plot details are still vague on what new adventure awaits Jones, as are details behind who Waller-Bridge will play. The film is set to bow on July 29, 2022.
Waller-Bridge has had quite run after her TV show Fleabag became a critical darling, eventually sweeping the 2019 Emmys including wins for Best Actress and Best Comedy Series. Since then she has been busy on the TV and film front, serving as an exec producer on the hit BBC show Killing Eve as well as serving as a writer on the next James Bond pic No Time to Die. She is also set to co-star with Donald Glover in the Amazon series Mr. & Mrs. Smith, where she will also serve as an exec producer and writer.

This would mark a sort of pseudo-reunion for Waller-Bridge and Lucasfilm, having voiced L3-37 in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
Waller-Bridge is repped by UTA, Independent Talent, Hatton McEwan Penford and Ziffren Brittenham LLP.

I dont mind doing a new Indiana Jones, its not like the character couldn't make for endless adventures, I just want it to be good.

Logan's great, but in general James Mangold is a very boring director to me. And there's no reason for a fifth Indiana Jones movie, so i have nothing for me here.

There's no reason for a 5th Indiana Jones movie starring a geriatric Harrison Ford

Ford is legend and all, but come ON. he was old even in 2008 when Crystal Skull came out

Fleabag is genuinely one of the best TV shows ever made. Disappointed it doesn't appear she'll have a hand in the script though.

another thing is how will they'll handle Shia Labeouf's character

I'm assuming they'll just pretend that never happened

I would rather have a sequel about Indy's daughter than a reboot in which he's a woman.

Or Marion considering she finally married Indy at the end of Crystal Skull. That would be real shitty if they just killed her offscreen like Adrian in Rocky Balboa after bringing her back just to fulfill an arc.

Just do a brief "you're gonna do what with our son?!!" Chichi style cameo at the start, or a throwaway lampshade line early on.

They were petty enough to kill off Sean Connery as Henry Jones Sr. because he wouldn't return. I could see them doing the same to Karen Allen's Marian.

For some reason her face just screams "nazi villain" too me. I doubt they would used nazis as a villain for a third time especially if the movie is set in the 50's/60's, buuuuuuuut I guess they could still use them as a villain if it was set in 2021 so

Steven Spielberg said after Schindler's List that he'd no longer allow Nazis as villains in non-serious media. He's stuck to that. He even blocked a Roger Rabbit prequel from getting made because it featured Roger fighting Nazis in World War 2.
