while sure, the distinction can be important, double bass is the only type of "bass" that could ever have been a member of the NY Philharmonic so the distinction wasn't important here >:(

She was in high school and was simply astounded when she heard the orchestra. She played piano, and she asked the conductor if she could join and he told her to grab a bass since she was tall and they needed bass players, and shes been at it ever since

Leonard Bernstein, the NY Phil conductor who hired her and arguably the most famous classical musician ever in the modern day, actually threatened to quit because he knew she was the best bass player at the audition and the Board wasnt sure if they were ready for a female musician. badass as FUCK yo

I should clarify: the Board of the NY Phil was sexist; Bernstein said he'd quit if they didn't hire her
