This show really went out with a bang. Infiltrating the kastle was that much exhilarating knowing how dark it's been and how characters kan get killed off.

Much better ending than Chimera Ant. Everything thing about the last couple of episodes is just fucking awful.
No way, nothing to me is ever going to be worse then the fucking narrator telling us "well, that's the end of this arc"

Honestly I prefer a narrator to characters talking to themselves or their enemies all the time, squeezing in entire novels' worth of dialogue into what's supposed to be split second instances. That's typically what happens in shounen and the narrator doing it is a fresh change of pace IMO.
My thoughts exactly, good post.

I feel like some parts of the arc wouldnt be possible without the narrator. But in general things should be shown, not told. It does drag on a bit at times which is my main complaint. Its still the best arc. Its amazing how they blur the line between good and bad in a believable way.

As scar pointed out, "shown, not told" is a funny criticism to level at a specific shonen for using a narrator when the entire genre likes to lay out literally everything in painstaking verbiage. I suspect it's a problem with how they transcribe it from manga panels straight to anime panel to panel, though.

"Show don't tell" isn't really made for this. "Show don't tell" means you don't just say a character is cool or smart, you have to show it. It's why the Game of Thrones ending is so fucking awful.
In this case, the decision to tell the audience about each characters' abilities is a meaningful decision. Without it, the audience would be playing a game of trying to figure out how each character functions while the action is happening. Instead, they SEE how each character is thinking and trying to outplay their opponent. It's the difference between watching a chess game as each move is explained in detail by a pro versus watching a chess game without understanding any of the rules in the first place. The second option can be interesting, but the first option was an artistic choice.

funny that the reason there was a narrator on that arc is because Togashi don't want to draw in detail, but then the fans eat it up like it's the best thing ever.
the art quality of that arc is way worse than the previous arcs.

one of the reason i hate chinese wuxia comics is the overuse of narrator, and this goes with HxH too.

Changing the timing and context of a character introduction is quite a far stretch away from excising like 60% of the exposition and mood of the climax of the arc. The narrator is part of the structure of the final portion of the arc; if you remove the narrator, you're essentially removing the support beams in a house. You can replace them, but you're then asking the anime team to completely re-write one of the most well-regarded segments of one of the most well-regarded manga stories of all time.

That seems kind of risky.
to be fair, the anime did really drop the ball with Kite

introducing him via a flashback when he becomes relevant, rather than in the first episode, made Gon's whole character arc much more contrived

Like I said, I'm not against the narrator explaining stuff organically, but when he narrates every single minute detail of every scene it just drags on. Please tell me how many adaptations of books keep the narrator intact like HxH did?

And after seeing some of the latest chapters of the manga, I hope we never get a continuation of the anime. Just write a fucking novel already Togashi, ffs.
