Current Events > Scenario: You find the murderer of your parents, but he's completely 180'd.

One day, your parents are killed in a mugging by some random young thug who escaped the scene and was never apprehended.
Over twenty years later, you not only have acquired the hard proof of his crime that you need, but you have tracked him down to his residence.

Turns out, in the years since that crime, he has completely turned his life around, living in a small house and is a loving husband and father to his housewife and two young children. He is seen as a good-hearted paragon in his community, always willing to lend a friendly helping hand to anyone who needs it. You have uncovered no evidence that this is all a charade, either; his actions are genuine and true.
However, no one in his neighborhood or his family knows about his past, including the murder; the truth would assuredly disrupt both his community and especially the lives of his family, permanently in the latter's case.

Do you bust him for his crime regardless? Or do you leave it be?

You do not punish people who have nothing to do with your loss, and no innocents should ever be killed in revenge. If you want to harm the killer fine but their family should never be touched.

There's no such thing as "turning your life around". He's a killer, his brain is wired in such a way that allows him to kill. Treat him the same as you would a zoo animal that has killed a human, and put that fucker down.

You can also just have him arrested, Im almost always down for the path of revenge but humiliating him and disgracing him in front of the entire community would be worse in this case. Show them how much of a scum bag he was before his I want to change my life but he never turned himself in.

Having him be ruined is a fate worse then death since his good deeds are now tainted since it shows if he truly wanted to repent he would have served his time.

Fuck that. My parents are dead. That's two lives lost, 1 long line of good deeds kut short, and a whole lot of devastated family members. He dies exposed.

Why is his life worth more than the lives of my family. Fuck him. He doesnt deserve a life outside prison and if I report him, its his fault his family is suffering not mine

I chose to let him go. Event though that was my choice, I still dont know if that was the right decision. That would be tough.

I know some people on here are probably reading this like Im crazy for letting him go. Maybe you are right

the only crazy thing is how many people here want vengeance and bloodshed then later in the same month will talk about the death penalty being barbaric and how we shouldnt use prison for revenge but rehabilitation. And I can say for a fact some of these usernames are the same people who would do that

you forgive this guy and you move on. If he changed his life around its out of guilt the last twenty years (and guilt is so much heavier on the soul than hatred) so maybe it would bring him closure for the child of those he killed to forgive him

Hmm maybe I wasn't clear enough, but my post was referencing people claiming its "revenge" to get him arrested. They clearly don't know the difference between revenge and justice.

Revenge would be taking matters into your own hands and doling out whatever punishment you see fit. Justice would be having him arrested and tried, where his actions can be judged by a court of law.

there is a huge huge huge difference between bill cosby and this scenario

in this scenario, its presented as a street gangbanger murders them for some cash, becomes haunted by guilt, runs from that life and spends his entire life trying to repent by becoming a family man and leader of his community

bill cosby meanwhile USED his standing in his community and reputation as a family man to drug and rape women. a nazi prison guard just doesnt have any more prisons to guard. time and age is what stopped these 2 men, not remorse.

this scenario is a lot different from bill cosby and the nazi guard who have given zero indication of change and remorse. although id say if the nazi prison guard then spent the next 20 years of his life donating to the jews and leading jewish outreach programs out of guilt, then id feel similar about them, that theyve been successfully rehabilitated and dont need to spend their final days in prison.

I invent a flawless alias complete with new fingerprints, a perfect mask, ensure I have no identifying marks/indicators, and then get a gun with no serial number on the black market.

Then I call the police and report the man to them, with all of the evidence in hand. I ensure with all of my resources and means that he gets put in prison for life.

There must always be consequences for committing a serious, irreparable crime like murder, even if the perp has completely reformed/found Jesus/achieved enlightenment/whatever since successfully evading the long arm of the law, especially if there is even just one survivor of the victim that still wishes to see him face justice.
