Well, they try to hold true to the comics, and he's one of the few in the movies with a comic counterpart with much of a civilian life to protect. Iron Man's been there, but his identity has been in and out over the decades.
I find it weirder for his character. His whole schtick was to be a famous Avenger in the first movie and he doesn't have the "poor Aunt May's heart can't take it" excuse from the comics (in more ways than one). --- I'm not saying that less toxic gaming journalists would lead to less toxic gamers. I remember the 90s cartoon. A group of villains ganged up on him and unmasked him. They didn't believe Peter Parker was really Spider-man. They released him and told him to go find the real one.
