The JP strategy is to give you all sorts of nice freebies so that you build up a nice account and become invested in the game.

I've seen a number of issues with localized games over the years. They slow updates and create scarcity to encourage you to spend money. There's frequently license issues that prevent collabs, content is probably censored in places and if they might even sell previously free event items for real money.
