It was originally shot in 4:3 Go look at Whedon vs. Snyder comparisons on Youtube, and you'll see that the horizontal space is exactly the same--nothing is cut off in either version on the sides. But the vertical space is definitely better utilized in the Snyder version. You see further up and further down the scene in 4:3 than in Whedon's cropped version that fills a wide screen. They didn't crop out a quarter of anything by displaying 4:3 You've changed your tune from "shot in 1.85" to "framed in 1.85" which is true but not your original argument and it ultimately means that the widescreen release of the only one that was cropped, in this case, simply cropping everything out of the frame.
