No ones playing because anyone with eyes can see Endgame had more color. Skin tones in JL look like they're in ungraded LOG still.

False. It was originally shot in 4:3

Go look at Whedon vs. Snyder comparisons on Youtube, and you'll see that the horizontal space is exactly the same--nothing is cut off in either version on the sides.

But the vertical space is definitely better utilized in the Snyder version. You see further up and further down the scene in 4:3 than in Whedon's cropped version that fills a wide screen. You're literally getting more of every scene with the Snyder Cut ratio.

Fair point, but it fits 4:3 better than it fits a regular widescreen tv. You see the same amount left-to-right in both cuts, but you see more of the top and bottom in Snyder's cut.

You're not losing anything, you're gaining height.

That's not true at all. They're cutting out part of the frame when they put it into 4:3. They don't shrink the image. They basically put black bars on the side of the already shot full frame image.

A lot of movies actually do this for wide screen but you never notice because they're shot with the intention of being wide screen. Most cameras, even bottom of the barrel dslrs have built in aspect ratio bars for framing so you can shot for editing.

I'm not comparing the movies side by side but this absolutely has to be wrong. You can visually see cut off portions of frames in JL if you just look at it.

Like it is impossible that they arent cutting anything out lol

That is incorrect. Nothing was cut out. The parts that were cropped for the widescreen theatrical version were restored to match the scenes that only existed in the 1.43 ratio.

This video demonstrates it pretty well:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQF0L2n9FM8

Look at some of the details on the sides, like the edge of the police car, the angles of the buildings, etc. Then look at the top and bottom and realize how much more you're seeing at once in the Snyder Cut. Most of the time you're losing nothing, other times there are minor differences that are more about the framing than the aspect ratio.

Yeah I'm guessing they rearranged a majority of the CGI environment in order to fit things in frame. There's plenty of moved around objects, or resized, in the environment in the video and in those pics in order to make it fit frame. Which is smart. But there is a noticeable distance in frame from character to edge of screen at points in that video, which is noticeable especially in close up shots of multiple people in the Snyder cut. Cool thing about pillarboxing/letterboxing is it can be an illusion of sorts.

OR movie magic he was able to change aspect ratio without any cropping whatsoever and he's just fucking awful at framing.

The movie was shot in 1.43 like Snyder said he shot the movie in, cropped by Whedon for widescreen, and Snyder used the originals to match his 1.43 only scenes for the Snyder cut.

Lol dude it wasn't shot in 4:3. We already went over this.

Sorry, 4:3 would be 1.33. Either way it wasnt shot at 1.43. It was shot full frame as both snyder and the director of photography stated.

You should really reread the polygon article you posted. The important scenic information was framed in 1.85:1 but the film they actually recorded was 1.43:1

What wasnt as clear at the time of the theatrical release was that, while Snyder and Wagner had framed Justice League for 1.85:1, they had captured full-frame footage. This gave Snyder, in theory, the ability to open up sequences to the taller IMAX aspect ratio.

3:2. Framing for 1.85 is what's more important here because that was the intention of what they filmed on set. They cropped down to 4:3 in post. Also you're confusing 4:3 and IMAX Film together. IMAX Film is slightly larger

1.43 is the IMAX ratio, not 1.33. 1.33 is just what HBO Max put out.

Also your latest post seems to be directly at odds with what you said here.

They're literally cropping out a quarter of a full frame image. They didn't shoot it with intention and it shows in the movie.

https://www.polygon.com/movies/22336749/justice-league-4-3-square-box-look-on-tv

This article says it was shot in 1.85:1 which is a helluva lot wider than 4:3. 1.85:1 is slightly larger than 16:9.

  1. They didn't crop out a quarter of anything by displaying 4:3
  2. You've changed your tune from "shot in 1.85" to "framed in 1.85" which is true but not your original argument and it ultimately means that the widescreen release of the only one that was cropped, in this case, simply cropping everything out of the frame. The ZSJL cut is uncropped (or minimally cropped to fit into 4:3)

The HBO Max version isn't the IMAX version. Snyder says he's got plans on releasing a black & white IMAX version for maximum pretentiousness sometime in the future when the pandemic is over.

You dont understand what I'm saying because you're quick firing Google searches of aspect ratios and not understanding what they mean. You initially said the movie was shot in 4:3, then 1.43 (probably as a misunderstanding thinking it was the same as 4:3), when the movie was shot in neither of those. And understanding the crop from 3:2 of a framed shot of 1.85 down to 4:3 (not 1.43) is a little more complicated then "hurr durr big shot get smaller"

Actually I think that same kind of understanding of aspect ratios and framing also resulted into Justice League lol

Nope I never said 4:3. I said IMAX. 4:3 is the HBO Max crop for TV compatibility while being the closest common aspect ratio to IMAX.

Maybe he didn't film 1.43 maybe it was 3:2 like you said but the difference is so small it's irrelevant and any cropping from 3:2 to 4:3 would be barely noticable and it would still show more information than if the 1.85 framing was also the crop.

Anyway lots of different filmmakers have lots of weird obsessions. Peter Jackson is hung up on HFR movies, Zack loves tall formats, Nolan thinks home streaming is offensive to art, and Scorsese just hates everything.
