It was recently revealed that all PS4s will eventually kill themselves. But it's okay, because the PS5 can play 99% of the PS4's library! Sure it's unfortunate that you're going to lose access to all digital games and a handful of physical releases, but just get a PS5 and everything's (mostly) fine!

But... what if the PS5 does the same thing eventually? What then? And more importantly, would that mean Sony is intentionally designing their systems to do this?

Then we hope that the PS6 also has PS4 BC.

Otherwise good luck trying to play PS4 games if there isn't a solid emulator in a few decades.

Yes.

But the console needs to verify the replaced battery with an online check. So if the servers go down the console is a brick.

No biggie, just switch out the battery a week or two before a shutdown. Or just sell and run.

I can't find anything that says. All I know is that unlike the clock problem with the original Xbox, there's no fix for this that isn't a temporary solution.

People need to class-action it and the judgement either needs to be that Sony needs to replace these for free and do the verification on their end forever, they need to never take the servers down, or they need to release an update that removes the verification check from the server.

Clock battery death is an old problem. I had to replace my saturn clock battery after it died and wiped all my saves years ago.

By the time this becomes an issue I'm sure someone will find a way around it. Either through some kind of retron ps4 or a way to spoof the check.

Basically a similar issue as that which plagued the Pokemon Gen 2 games, since the battery also kept the ingame time, which caused it to drain much faster than in other Game Boy games.

Oh shit wait- THIS is what causes 34878-0?

I had a hell of a time last year when my first PS4 kept getting this error. It was random though- it would let me play some games longer than others, but for the most part I would always end up with the CE-34878-0 error after playing for a little while. Some games were brutal.

I searched and searched and searched for a fix and could not find one. This can't be the sole reason for 34878-0 is it?

I ended up buying a PS4 Pro last year because I couldn't find a fix for it

If replacing the battery is all it takes, I'm glad I kept it.

There are already ways around this for both the PS3 and PS4. Basically just need to jailbreak them.
