Once it is published to Tik Tok it is technically the intellectual property of Tik Tok. Just like if I were to create an algorithm that could sell for millions on company time, that technically belongs to the company.

You know how much privilege you gotta have to argue that properly crediting a source for work you're using to promote yourself is bridge too far?

How do you steal a dance that's gone viral

When you go on national TV to use it to enrich yourself and dont credit the creator

I don't think there's ever really going to be a solution for this.

TikTok is designed to go viral and have copycats that snowball from there. That's the whole concept of the site. By the time it gets super popular to the point where it's a dance on a late night show the origins of the dance is often no longer known. TikTok and Fortnite have no incentive to change that because they want these viral dances to be associated with them.

On top of this the general population has never really cared about who created a dance. If it's not from a music video or TV show it may as well have popped up from thin air.

I do understand people getting upset when people a lot more famous than them are able to use their dances and make millions from it but a lot of social media is like this by design.

Kind Regards,
Darmik

If something is a viral meme dance, then it has become something beyond the creators. They are not ripping anyone off. They are participating in that stupid meme culture. If someone is going around pillaging obscure dances and portraying them as their own, then they're stealing the dances. Whether there is any legal protection for a dance, I have no clue.

Fallon or Rae could've taken all of ten seconds to let people know where they could find the sources of the dances they apparently both felt made great material for his show and her album promotion

The erasure is willfull

Tiktok is nothing but unoriginal people copying the same dances/trends as everyone else. Nobody knows (or cares) who starts said dances/trends. Addison Rae is popular because she's hot, not because she choreographed an original routine.

like, are there people who legitimately heard jimmy fallon say "my next segment features this random teaching me how to dance on a children's app!" and didn't immediately change the channel?

He says in a topic showing the original creators of these dances and is on the second page of people who care arguing against those who "don't care" yet some reason feel they should push back against those that do. Seriously, at least we have a reason to be here. We care. You guys are basically trying to middle finger the black community because apparently you're just bored but don't actually care.

My beef definitely isn't against Fallon. He has nothing to do with this ongoing thing. He just was in the wrong place at the wrong time. People decided to finally try to expose it while he unknowingly played into it

This would be no different than if a bunch of Soundcloud rappers uploaded songs and those things went viral and were put into popular video games.

And then this Addison Rae person covered the songs on TikTok, got put on Fallon and no one even acknowledged who actually created it.

It's like putting a cover band on your show to perform and not once saying who they are playing.

It's art. Whether you think that art is "good" or "bad" is irrelevant. It's morally wrong and even simply saying their names/crediting them (which is the easiest thing in the world to do) would actually help them.

And it's far easier to do it now with actual recording evidence to help argue over who created a specific dance since we have these sites that have dates and times attached to it.

People watching others make a whole career that ensures they're set for life off the dances they created while they are told by people like you to just shut up and accept. You're the good guy tho, don't worry.

This is why Im claiming you guys are thinking about this in a very shallow way. They are only the very tip of the iceberg. Well, her. Fallon has nothing to do with any of this. She represents a system put in place that effects everyone on the platform

I'mma take the internet side of this argument, and say the dances no longer belong to the creators once it's been shared. Those dances belong to everyone now. Having said that, Fallon should've at least given credit to the inventors of these dances as a tribute to their creativity.

We know, the mirror hurts to look into. A lot of people dont want to explore a part of them they didnt think existed. Theres a REASON Fallon, and many others like him, adopt black culture while not taking the creators with them. They pay people A LOT of money to do market research and it bores out...people want black art and culture, minus the black bodies that create it.
