If a poor person gets a $100 speeding ticket, that could have a big impact on their financial situation. $100 could be a week's worth of groceries or that month's heating bill.
A rich person gets a $100 speeding ticket and scoffs. The consequence of a crime should be proportional to the impact it has on that person financially. --- Rainbow Dashing: "it's just star wars" AutumnEspirit: *kissu* ... Copied to Clipboard!

Absolutely. Like if you make a million dollars maybe that speeding ticket is 100k. That'd be about proportional to someone living paycheck to paycheck with a 100 dollar ticket.

I get what you're saying but that's literal discrimination which I'm not keen on.

Because then you're just screwing people over for having money rather than just helping people who don't have money. Fines are supposed to be a deterrent. Fines are supposed to be a deterrent. A $100 fine means nothing to someone in the top 20%, why would they ever not commit that crime? Sure, but if you go all the way it makes some sort of fines ones you farm out to subcontractors instead of taking the fine yourself. Are you Jeff Bezos and want to drive at 150 MPH? Hire a driver that makes $70k a year and let him pay the fines. Or are you a company that makes deliveries in the city? Hire out contractors to double park or park in tow away zones or other ticket able places. You don't want the company at risk of those fines, you need a private contractor. And ultimately being wealthier doesn't make you guiltier of something if you do it. And the 8th amendment makes the argument of "excessive fines" a no brainer argument to a group of people that will have the resources to fight it. --- ... Copied to Clipboard!
