Each of the towns you'll visit for your summoner pilgrimage will have a rare item inside the cloister of trials, often unlocked with the Destruction Sphere. As a rule of thumb, ensure you knock that out before going deeper to unlock your next esper. Most you can revisit very late in the game, which nullifies some of their usefulness.

Kimarhi is either awesome or benched forever, pending your love for the dude. Pretty much everyone has a linear track to level up. Kimahri just swirls around the center of the sphere grid and then, once you gain some unlock Spheres, start following someone else's path or continues to just dip and dabble across the board.

Personally I think he's a better "Wakka", "Rikku", or "Auron" more than Wakka, Rikku, or Auron, because Lancet is cool. Or, you can do some funky stuff like unlock some of Rikku's path for use, steal, and a bunch of agi, then dip over halfway through Yuna's for Reflect, Dispel and Curaga, and then probably get Holy before Yuna does.

Honestly it's a pretty easy game. When you start to enter the snow area get some stuff that helps against zombie to deal with a gimmick boss.

He made a better black mage than Lulu in one of my playthroughs, with access to some of Yunas white magic as well as steal and use.

Make sure you grab all the Al Bhed Primers. Some are missable and you have to restart the game to get them.

Wouldn't be as bad if not for the 5 minute unskippable cutscene that precedes it.
