Replaying it for the first time in awhile and I am starting to remember all the awful moments from when I was a kid. Mind you I was like 5 when I beat it for the first time.

-The fucking wall in Hydro City.
-Got stuck in so many spots in Marble Garden because I didn't know what the blue bumper wheels did.
-Literally gave up playing as Sonic in Carnival Night. You know exactly why. It still gives me PTSD.
-Couldn't solve the infinite loop in Ice Cap Zone.
-I kid you fucking not. I spent months on Flying Battery because I kept falling for the thing that makes you slide backwards and there was a hidden tunnel that was behind the wall.
-Another infinite fucking loop in Sandopolis Zone

I had to beat the game with Knuckles. Sonic was impossible because of the fucking barrel. I found out a year or so later how to solve the barrel. Then I made it all the way to the final boss which took me almost another half a year to figure out.

I was a really dumb kid.

I loved it as a kid because Sonic games were on a shortlist of games I could beat 100% of the time

A ton of Genesis/Master Systen/SNES/NES games just had bullshit difficulty where you would run out of lives/continues on the last level and have to start over

Fuck Golden Axe 3 went a step further gave you a bad ending if you didn't beat the game without using a continue

Even if you cheated to level skip to the end, you still got the bad ending

Well now I don't feel so stupid

I actually figured out carnival night as a kid...by accident. I was in 6th grade at the time I think. I had come back to the game after years of not playing it (and of course getting stuck there). Once I got there, I just started pressing all the buttons on the controller in a "maybe something will happen but I doubt it" way and all of a sudden I noticed the barrel going up and down. I was like "Oh shit!!!!" Literally was stuck on that for years.

Not sure, I just remember having no clue how to beat the level because if I recall it's not exactly... linear or whatever. It was a long time ago though so I hardly remember

Actually, I think I remember getting past the barrel as a younger kid before I figured out how it worked. Pretty sure I picked up the 2nd controller and made Tails carry me.

The old Sonic games are kinda Janky. My favorite of them though is Sonic CD

I figured out a glitch that helped get passed that stupid barrel. I would get a bubble shield and combine that with a controlled that could autopress a button. That would (hopefully) overwhelm the barrel and glitch you through it. Or into the wall. >_>

I remember getting so angry as a kid at the fact that Spinball wasn't compatible with it. That game was hard as shit, and I just wanted the ability to glide.

Just raging in my bedroom while the error screen played on the TV. It's pretty hilarious in hindsight

I loved Sonic 3 growing up, but looking back, there were a lot of puzzling design decisions that should have been addressed before they released it. The barrel was the worst, but Marble Garden wasn't exactly a walk in the park either. And the last level kind of sucked balls. Sonic and Knuckles was the better game by far, but the best stages in 3 were better.
