The problem isn't what one billionaire is doing vs another, the problem is that something's wrong if someone can get that rich in general. With monarchs, even if there were some good kings, the idea of monarchy has flaws. Or with a monopoly. It's possible that one company that owns everything will have fair/decent rules but simply owning a monopoly is inevitably gonna have something fucked up because there's nothing to keep it in check, and those systems that made it become a monopoly in the first place are highly susceptible to corruption just by nature of being the only thing.

Or for a modern example, ACAB. It's not that there aren't good cops, it's that the system itself has huge flaws that need to be looked at and it's simply too easy to get away with shit as a cop.

I highly highly doubt Elon is pouring all of his money towards interesting things and is totally following every rule to keep his amount of wealth, because it's hard to even get that rich without doing grimy stuff like that in the first place.

The Earth already does so many things naturally for us. Plentiful water source, good environment full of O2 for us, good synergy between plants and animals (CO2 and O2, animal waste becomes plant fertilizer, plants feed animals which help spread plant seeds, and so on), sunlight and humidity cycles for those plants, ozone layer to protect from radiation, gravity that our organs are accustomed to survive in (which matters for pumping blood, bone density, etc), and so on. Probably a lot of other shit too.

To recreate all of that from scratch, and THEN somehow thinking Earth 2 wont run into the same problems, it just doesn't seem so feasible if we can't do it here. If we had a way to, for example, grow a shit ton of crops artificially in very quick amount of time, that technology would be so much better suited on Earth because there are already a lot of things the Earth does that we don't have to artificially reproduce.

So now we have to not only invent the quick plant technology but also be able to artificially recreate Earth somewhere else to do it.

The stars are burning themselves up as it is. Nothing lasts forever, it's not like we're even a blip on the universe's daily resource consumption. Stars explode, dust scatters, energy disperses, planets and stars and galaxies form and disintegrate steadily.

Even if we had the entire lifespan of the universe to try to consume every planet and star, we would never amount to anything in the cosmic scale.

Think about what humans need to live on a planet. We need water and food and shelter from space radiation. Earth does so much already. We would have almost literally recreate Earth AND THEN perfect all the procedures. Why don't we just focus on perfecting those procedures, instead of also trying to recreate Earth too? We already have Earth. We cannot even give clean water to everyone on the planet, how the hell do you think it's gonna work when we DON'T have 326 million trillion gallons of water all around us? We are gonna have to create the water from scratch.

What is simpler? Sitting on your couch while Earth deflects deadly gamma radiation from the sun, or creating an entire ozone layer from scratch, calibrating it to make sure it blocks the right things, and making sure it's self sustaining?

If we move to another planet, WE have to create the water from scratch. All the food. All of it. If we cannot even provide clean water to every human on the planet now, and there are starving people everywhere, why would moving to another planet be a good idea? We need to be able to perfect those things on Earth first.

It's not like I'm proposing that we abandon the Earth for some reason. Obviously the technology we develop to colonize Mars will have applications on Earth, too. Same thing happened with the space race. We had new technologies by the truckload thanks to advancements in plastic, propulsion, our understanding of gravity, etc.

My perception of the issue is more like...if you live in a house with your wife, and you have two kids, those kids eventually grow up. Say, for example, those kids want to stay at home after they become adults, and you say 'sure.'

The house is a little crowded with four adults living there, but not so bad. Then, those adults bring in their wife/husband to live with them, too. Six adults, now, and you're starting to notice how much faster the fridge empties each week. The house is a little messy now. Trash in some places that doesn't get picked up, carpet wearing out and getting dirt pressed in. You can clean it up, sure, but you have to clean it up more often than before.

Time passes again, and your kids and their spouses each have two more kids of their own. The house is jam-packed with people, at this point, and your income alone can no longer sustain the pace of consumption. It comes time for your kids to leave your house and go to another house to start their own 'colonies.'

Not because your house is impossible to clean, but because the effort of keeping it clean and stocked has exceeded the capacity of your weekly time, energy, and income.

I'm just saying that if we open another outlet for humans on Mars, it will give us more breathing room on Earth. The technology that would come about as a result would be extremely beneficial in maintaining a living situation on Earth, too, but having another place for some percentage of the population to go will give us more sustainable years on Earth.
