Honestly, the variants shouldn't be named by where they were first discovered either. The UK variant wasn't from the UK, that's just where they did enough tests to identify it.

The virus was already being called Corona Virus and Covid 19 when Trump started that China Virus shit.

It was a deliberate attempt to shape the narrative and blame China for whatever happened afterwards, and Trump admitted as much in his constant attempts to blame them throughout 2020 and his refusal to accept any responsibility.

The location-based names for variants could quite possibly be less accurate - it's pretty hard to even define exactly when it becomes a "variant", let alone figure out exactly where it happened - than identifying the virus itself based on where it's all but certain that it started.

Now of course, that's only talking about the names themself, and not necesserially the motives for using them...

We shouldn't, and some do make a point of instead saying "variant first identified in ____", but ultimately - the general public is going to remember "UK variant", "SA variant", etc more clearly and with less confusion between them than they'll remember B.1.1.7, B.1.351, etc.

Because we have other widely-accepted and recognizable names, like "coronavirus" or "covid", to use for what would otherwise be called the "China virus".

No equivalent "average-person-friendly" name exists for the variants, except for these location-based ones. I also have to wonder how easy it would be for such a thing to exist at all - though I do notice only a few are noteworthy enough for the location-based names to stick, so if there was some system of arbitrary (but more like codenames than just letters and numbers) names to assign to them, that could maybe work...

In HK and Taiwanese state media almost called it exclusively as "CHINA WUHAN Virus". To the point where it has become politically incorrect to use the official name "Covid 19".
People have been cyberbullied for it.

I don't understand what point you're trying to make. My question is, if people around you don't like it, why is it so hard for you to just not say it? instead of saying "BUT THEY SAY IT"...why can't you as an individual just say "oh ok, my bad i won't call it that anymore"...Same goes for Trump. He didn't have to say it, but he continued to for no other reason than to be an asshole.."but it originated there!"...yea, and everyone knew that. They didn't need Trump reminding them. For one variant? Or meaningful, easy-to-distinguish names for multiple variants popping up around the same time?

You'd have to pretty much have names ready-to-go for new ones as they come up, or at least guidelines on how to select them. Which in turn raises two problems - firstly, you can already imagine how the tinfoil brigade will react. Secondly, and far more importantly, the risk is there of "name collisions" if two different variants are more-or-less discovered at the same time in different places, if the custom is just "here's the name for the next one..."

It's not unworkable, but it's not completely trivial either. More importantly, it needs to actually exist in order for people to use it - until then, the location-based names are the "user-friendly" codenames.
