Progressives think socialism is a boogeyman? Shit most of the people in the US I met thought socialism meant welfare state capitalism as seen in most non-US first world countries and identified as that. Of course that isn't what socialism is, but I have a lot of trouble believing somehow who considers themselves progressive in the US considers socialism a boogeyman.

Also for the record although tankies support Tiananmen Square, the origin is actually from a different case of the USSR sending in tanks to crush a labor uprising. These happened fairly often in the USSR and its satellite states, because of a lack of worker rights, no ability to unionize, striking being illegal, etc. They were often met violently by tanks, machine guns etc. I got to see some of the memorials to worker uprisings in East Germany and Poland myself.
