I think it's the ugly cat designs, the recycled plot, and the pretentiousness of it. It's a world in which character literally connect with nature. Also, James Cameron can't get a social or political message across with any kind of subtlety.

What makes it pretentious exactly? And I mean the story is pretty original so idk where you're pulling that from.

They literally connect to nature -- hair follicles linking them to the animals they wish to ride. "Nature" itself is an actual deity on Pandora. The trees, the river, all that stuff is alive and interconnected. The Marines are oversimplified. Oh, and there's that whole bit about Jake being the bad guy for getting attacked by wolves.

And the plot is recycled. It's more or less just a space update of Dances With Wolves -- right down to the white guy outsider immediately becoming the leader of the tribe. (And they got Wes Studi to play the chief.)

Jon Dunbar and Jake Sully are nothing alike.

Jon doesn't even become the leader of the Lakota tribe lmao he is just accepted into the tribe. I seriously don't understand how you draw a connection to the plot of Avatar and Dances With Wolves other than "white guy appreciates the nature he is sent to destroy and tries to defend it"

Not sure if you're joking or what... Avatar did so well because of the massive hype machine surrounding it. Nobody cares about Avatar 2. If they wanted people to care, they would've released the sequels in a timely fashion

Probably benefits Disney to get people talking about Avatar and its sequels. It's overall riskier than their MCU movies so I doubt they care that it got the record back. Easy thing to throw in front of a sequel trailer.

I think its a certainty, Cameron says of Avatar passing Avengers: Endgame at the box office. But lets give Endgame their moment and lets celebrate that people are going to the movie theater.

Yeah right. Lol hes gonna have to rerelease the movie 6 times to do so. Just like he did with the first avatar. He rereleased it 3 times to get the numbers that it did. 95% of people dont even know the characters names besides sully.

They're called marines in the movie. Jake wears a t-shirt with the marines logo on it. His opening monologue has an ironic use of the expression, "Once a marine, always a marine."

And he's answering to Col. Quaritch whether officially or not.

And he's not answering to Col. Quaritch as a Marine, despite them both having been in the Marines. The Colonel was an Infantry Officer in the Marines.

He is the Colonel of RDA's security forces. Who are not the US Marines. Lol. You can make a vague description about a lot of things and call them the same movie.

Did you miss the scene where he said that Jake would walk like the "science pukes," quack like them, etc., but would answer to him? And then Jake proceeded, up until the third act of the movie, to answer back to Quaritch as an unofficial subordinate?

In any event, your pretending that it isn't a retread of Dances With Wolves isn't going to stop anyone else from calling it what it is. Just because something is derivative, that doesn't make it bad. But in the case of Avatar, it didn't have anything new to offer except some flashy special effects.

Watching avatar in theaters really was an experience. As much as nerds throw shade at the story being mediocre it was still an entertaining movie with beautiful visuals.

This is also why the movie got the record back as well. It's a movie to watch in the cinemas with some dorky 3D glasses and you watch the pretty visuals for three hours. People don't go to the cinemas for originality these days so I always found this a sort of pointless criticism.

Avatar has the record because it exploded the whole 3D fad by sheer amount of will and effort by James Cameron. So everyone felt like they had to go to the cinemas to experience it.

Either way I really don't see the issue. Most movies (especially blockbusters) do not use original plots. Batman is just Zorro and nobody cares.
