At least when you buy new, the car has very low miles and is going to be reliable for years to come. Buying a car at 70,000 miles means that someone got all the reliability, and now they're dumping the car onto you to deal with the headaches.

I guess you werent aware that we all have extensive mechanical knowledge and a fully equipped garage so we can do repairs and maintenance on the cheap and totally come out ahead on buying used.

Test drive any used car with knowledge. I can tell within 10 minutes how the previous driver drove and took care of it.

I also used to be a mechanic and can get my own parts with a discount.

Thats why you buy cars off of older, retired people. First car was inherited from my grandfather and it barely had 40k miles despite being a 15 year old car.

How is that possible? From not needing to commute to work?

Big strawmanning going on in here.

Our current car was a 2008 and we bought it in 2014 with only 32000km on the odometer for like $5.5k NZD. We've spent probably about $1000 on maintenance in the last 6-7 years, most of which was just annual servicing and replacing unavoidable things like tyres (twice) and brake pads. Pretty good deal imo.

Are you under the impression that the odometer is going to be literally 0? As in it didn't have to be driven into its spot on the lot? And it hasn't been test driven once?

I think they're saying that you can get most of the benefits of a new car without actually buying a new car. Something like getting a 1-3 year old car with 10k on it.

imo new cars are designed to be leased. I'm still surprised it didn't take much to total my car in terms of how not-severe the hit was.
