iirc this is pretty normal

they're pets until it's time for product, although I've heard of some farmers keeping one as real pet, and just giving love and care to the others until it's butcherin' time

My mother had pet rabbits until her mother secretly killed them in the night and fed them to her the next day. Ever since she told me that, I can't seem to look at grandma the same way.
