Hes not wrong. There are tons of people who have kids, ignoring birth control, knowing they cant provide for them. Two of my brother in laws have about 9-10 kids between them (ones paternity is in question), with various baby mommas. They can barely pay child support. One has adult kids and had another baby two years ago. Like wrap it up dude.

Your cousin is no idiot for doing this.

The state should offer free and easy sterilizations for people that want it.

Being dismissive of not being able to feed children because an adult was an idiot, or more likely doesn't have access to contraception/abortion isn't being terribly empathetic to the children who then suffer.

I generally don't have a problem with the sentiment until people use it as a reason to push policy that punishes innocent children. That's pretty much where it always winds up.

The U.S. not having a sufficient social safety net does not excuse bringing children into the world who will go hungry and be deprived of a happy childhood. That's fucking stupid reasoning.

"The would should be idyllic, therefore, I should be permitted to live my life as if the world is idyllic even if it means creating unnecessary suffering".

The state is never going to be perfect, or even sufficient. It should be better, but that doesn't forgive making terrible life decisions--The government SHOULD help people who need it, but you SHOULDN'T make life choices that intentionally make you dependent on the government. That's a toxic and untenable relationship between a government and it's citizenry.

I guess I just feel the government should be providing support to its children and that focusing on a poor parent distracts from the problem, be that feeding the child or ensuring are means/education to stop people having more children than they can support themselves.

Just feels like one of many statements used so people can say it so laws/support are never put in place as it's the fault of the parent and no one else's responsibility.

I think youre reading too much into this. I think no matter what country youre in, what government style youre under, what laws are in place, that the statement holds true. Dont fuck around and have kids when you cant support them, period.

It's easy to say, and we can all point to a bad example of someone living off of benefits and having a dozen kids but there are many in countries who don't have access to contraceptives, morning after pill or abortions where they get stuck in situations raising a child they can't support and never intended to. Admittedly in my own country we have easy access to all of this so it's not so much a problem but in America you see all the time states cutting access to these things which stop far more situations like this than the one bad example.

That is my issue with statements like this. It holds up the boogey man as the standard, and makes the actual problem/issues suffer as a result.
