Because nothing else in the bill would ever pass without the direct stimulus money. The thing is that the bill will never pass even with the stimulus money so kiss that $1400 goodbye.

Pelosi: "Here you go: it's a $2.3 trillion omnibus spending bill with $1400 checks attached that we already know Republicans are going to filibuster without using reconciliation rules which can take more than a month to get to the President's desk."

Getting anything done in government involves a little quid pro quo. Problem is no one trusts anyone to keep their word so everything has to be tied to everything else.

Honestly as someone who lives in Georgia and voted Blue it's pretty disgusting how often on TV, radio, and youtube those Ads said that and it's been over a month and nothing. I doubt we will see any kind of stimulus before April at this rate. But if thr Democrats really don't push this through I don't see GA staying Blue in 2 years time.

It'll be a swing state at the presidential level at least for the next decade.

People be acting like Dems have a guaranteed majority but so long as the filibuster remains in place, they might as well be fighting with both hands tied behind their back

lots of lies in here.

a "clean" stimulus bill of just $1400 checks would also be filibustered by republicans in the senate. we know this because they said so back in december when it was proposed:

https://www.cnbc.com/2020/12/31/covid-stimulus-update-mcconnell-rejects-votes-on-2000-checks.html

Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., who slammed the $2,000 direct payments as socialism for the rich.

McConnell has refused to hold a separate vote on the stimulus payments, instead tying them legislation that would repeal Section 230 and create a commission to study alleged issues with the presidential election.

so, democrats have three options.

they center around budgetary reconciliation, the "fuck it" rule used to pass obamacare as well as the trump tax cuts, which repealed the obamacare mandate in a rider.

you don't get to use reconciliation over and over, it's one time per session of congress. so you either use it for 'critical' legislation that you know the other party will never support (such as the trump tax cuts, or the obamacare provisions protecting people with pre-existing conditions), or for extreme party-line bullshit that your own party barely supports but severely hurts the opposition (such as the trump tax cuts' provision that ended the obamacare mandate--which had nothing to do with the trump tax cut's objectives). or both. republicans recently chose both for their tax cut in 2016.

the options are:

1) attempt to get republicans to support a clean bill, and fail. this was the strategy since december. it helped them elect two more senators in georgia, but now that it is not a cudgel that can be used to win elections, it is nothing but failing the american people.

2) pass JUST the stimulus using budgetary reconciliation, which would be widely seen as the greatest failure of political will in modern history. the republicans didn't have to do that for the last stimulus when COVID first struck--the gates parted because democrats weren't willing to destroy american lives to score political points, unlike the nazi party that calls itself "republican." nor was the 2008 stimulus bill passed this way.

3) pass the stimulus using budgetary reconciliation, but also use budgetary reconciliation to pass the things democrats would otherwise use budgetary reconciliation to pass, like restoring the mandate, undoing the trump tax cuts, and so on.

democrats continue to seek 1), while making the necessary contingency preparations for 3). make no mistake: republicans could ensure the bill passed tomorrow if they wanted to. they do not want to. they want you to suffer, so they can blame democrats for the suffering they caused.

demanding democrats commit political suicide by embarking upon 2) is something only nazi partisans or complete morons would do. 3) takes time.

deal with it, or elect republicans who would pass the stimulus.

only when republicans are the minority party.

when democrats are the minority party, and a crisis hits, the floodgates open and the government helps, passing spending bills to help people recover with huge bipartisan support. it's only when republicans stand to gain politically from the suffering of Americans that we come across this 'partisan gridlock'.

all 'same thing both sides' claims are exceptionally dishonest and misleading.

It's a mistake to assume the other parts of that bill are less important or less urgent. To name just a few items, it's
- a continuation of expanded unemployment benefits that are currently slated to expire in mid-March
- funding for state and local budgets that, absent massive amounts of expected sales tax revenue, would be forced to make cuts to education and other public services
- funding for public transit systems that saw ridership plummet during the pandemic

Just realized this was the difference.

Democrats trying to flip GA Senate race: $2,000 stimulus checks, $600 a week and retroactive UI, $15 minimum wage, hazard pay

Dems now: $1,400 checks, $400 a week and not retroactive UI, no $15 minimum wage, no hazard pay

So many broken promises.
