90% of the time if feels better having a silent protagonist with a menu of options that you choose dialogue from. Games are better when the budget for voice acting instead gos to better quality writing and more varied dialogue options.

The more I think about it the more I don't like MCs with any kind of personality, especially if they let you pick from options in dialogues that way I can imagine they are however I think they are. There's a huge problem with protagonists these days that are awesome until they start talking and then you're like "omfg shut up you dumbass"

It's more of an issue with VNs and anime, but I feel exactly the opposite

I cannot stand self-insert protagonists and always enjoy it when there's something cool about the MC

only time it works is when the protag is completely silent (e.g. pokemon/zelda)

For me it depends on the story. Like Persona with a voiced protagonist would be weird since you are making the decisions for them. But something where the main character is a developed character in their own right, like most of the Final Fantasy games, it makes sense if they are voiced. Dragon Quest is of course the classic example of the silent protagonist and I feel they always do it well. You really feel like an adventurer gathering a crew to explore the world, it works in that light hearted setting but I feel Final Fantasy would be very awkward with that kind of setup.
