I'm really so sick of seeing guns blasting in full-auto in the movies. If you actually fire a gun in real-life or served in the military/police, you'd know it's rare to almost never that people would fire guns in full-auto. YES, PEOPLE DON'T FIRE GUNS IN FULL-AUTO. Even the kid that went on a school massacre with a rifle didn't fire his in fullauto mode. It's just so stupid. Full-auto mode is usually used for suppressing fire but not actually for precise targeting. Even the standard military issued rifle M4 doesn't have a full-auto mode because it's unnecessary.

I think the only movie in the freaking history of 100+ years of cinema that came CLOSE to doing it right was John Wick 1. I remember the scene when Wick picked up a rifle and shot down enemies in mostly burst mode. At least that was something.

Seriously though. Do directors in Hollywood all never fired a gun before or what? How come movies, not just hollywood movies, but even just the most realistic-portrayal movies in general...always portray gunfire SO WRONG?

I was gonna say John Wick. Thats about as close as youre going to see. There was good focus on reloading and ammo scarcity. He actually ran out of ammo sometimes unlike the typical Hollywood revolver with fifty rounds.

They were going good until the sequel came along and they started the full-auto BS yet again.

I seriously don't get it. It's not like you cant make a good action sequence without full-auto machine gun firing in it. Imagine watching guns go off in precise semi-auto modes in back and forth gunfights. That'd actually be a refreshing take and cool AF to watch. Because yknow, it actually makes sense.

that criminal guy was still spamming full-auto. But if he was doing it for suppression, yeah makes sense.

Apart from that, that's a realistic gunfight for sure. I love how no one gets shot so easily from far distance.

If this is your only standard, I cannot understand why you are having such a problem. I've seen way more movies and shows where people fire in short bursts, or only fire one shot at a time.

I came into this thinking you would have issues with the actual rampant firearm inaccuracies in movies: Semi autos firing in burst or full auto, non automatic weapons firing in semi auto, complete lack of recoil, silencers which make guns almost completely silent, people holding guns wrong, ridiculous accuracy from ridiculous distances (looking at you, Walking Dead), people firing while the safety is on, firing more times than the gun can hold, and all sorts of other inaccuracies plague movies, but you picked this hill?

I wanted to put the topic title as '...fire guns in full-auto mode' but the word limit prevented me from doing that. I'm aware of the issues you mention too I'm obviously aware of but I find the one on full-auto mode by far the biggest oversight it seems even audiences are completely unaware of.

If you ask people how a silencer really sounds like, I'm pretty sure most know and agree it's not like how it's portrayed in movies. Also most movies dont really feature silencers anyway. The other issues you mention like lack of safety mode on and not reloading are mostly miniscule since movies don't make it as obvious. Meanwhile ask people if they know guns aren't meant to be fired in full-auto and I guarantee more surprises than not. Tell that to a Hollywood director and even he would probably be shocked.

If you didn't notice, the rest of issues you mention on long distance gun accuracy and recoil are related to the problem i highlighted on full-auto mode, you realise that? I know you're tryna overload your message and stuff, but c'mon. This IS the biggest issue related to gunfight portrayals in movies

Plus the fact that even John Wick makes the same mistake as well as the Heat movie is testament to that.

It's like literally no one in the movie industry knows about this.

honestly this may be an opportunity for you. if you have artistic interests, you could make short films or something demoing better gun scenes. maybe get some funding that way and make some movies, or etc. no idea how it'd work but i'd watch something like what you want to see.

I would if I could. Too bad I have almost no means of doing so. I got no sponsors, no team with me, little money for funding and a bad acting environment.

It'd be my dream for sure though

"Why do movie characters always fire guns in full auto" fits.

Assuming that the general public's view of guns doesn't come from movies and video games is quite bold. If you walk up to someone on the street and ask "how do you fire an Assault Rifle", I guarantee you a majority of them think you can just point and drain the whole magazine.
And if you really think the majority of people know that a silencer does dick-all indoors, then why don't we see everyone complaining about it? If people really know it's wrong, then people would be coming through saying "Ugh. Yet another movie where a silencer is way too strong."
The average person's idea of a gun is whatever they've seen on-screen recently. They don't know anything's wrong, and every issue should be addressed.

Depends. If it's an action movie buff, I'm pretty sure the dude should know how a real gun fires like. Heck, even CoD fanboys nowadays should know guns have something called recoil.

If you're talking about someone watching the action movie because her boyfriend dragged her to watch, sure likely she wont know any better

Because realism is not the first priority in a movie. Exciting action sequences are the priority. Full auto looks and sounds cool. They obviously know it's not realistic to have neverending ammo as well. But they do it anyway.

At least they handle handguns as semiautomatic.
