i think you're missing the simple point, that driving the speed limit is perfectly legal while tailgating can net you a ticket. break checking might not be the best option, but pulling over on the fucking highway isn't either.

newsflash. tailgating types don't care if you're going the speed limit, or even 5-10 over. you will meet ones that get on your ass eventually. or maybe this is the massachusetts road experience telling itself.

you can't control what they do. you can send them on their merry way or you can have some stress over it. brake-checking is a stupid and reckless thing to do.

highways tend to have these things called 'lanes', allowing for drivers to pass.

This makes me want to brake check more.

It's easy to gage when they aren't paying attention too, get them when they look down.

This still sounds very angry.

no, it is obvious that you are the angry one. it's why you're so insistent on passive aggression. god man relax. if you're such a safe driver my criticisms aren't for you then anyway, right? fuck brake-checkers, you with me? yeah?

The problem is there are literally people (you did it as well) advocating for people to pull over for them when that one, isn't always an option, and two shouldn't be rewarded. It isn't about competition.

i see you also read that post i responded to already. good. i'm assuming you'll go back and read my response to it. the tl;dr: in case you don't is that you can let these people go on their merry way, don't use your car to prove a point, you using your car to punish people is a fucked up thing to do, so don't do that -- you know, the points you continue to gloss over while attempting an insipid u mad.

If you constantly pull over for people who speed and drive recklessly they will continue to do it.

please don't use your car to teach other people lessons, holy shit.

This isn't me advocating for break checking nor saying that is the appropriate action.

no, it absolutely is. saying 'here are some good reasons to use your car to prove a point -- not that i think you should!' is pretty comical in terms of like, bad two-facedness.

also, i never said that it was 'about competition.' i said it brought out a tiny and competitive little person in a lot of people. another adjective that i want to toss out there is 'threatened.' people are anxious and hostile on the road. it's not just you; people will do very stupid and petty things when they feel road-insulted.

but i'm not really getting anywhere with you so don't worry about it.

As someone who works in auto insurance claims it is sadly an extremely effective way to get a payout. 99% of the cases you can't prove that they were brake checking so the party that rear ends them gets hit with the bill.

An easy way to avoid that is to not tailgate.

I remember clueless, bad drivers trying to make a case for why they should be able to tailgate without consequence.

EDIT: Well yeah you don't break check literal semi-trucks in a sedan. That's just ignorant. Still doesn't excuse tailgating whatsoever.

For some cases yes, but a lot of them happen in the big city where cars are packed together like sardines. Good luck avoiding someone who wants a pay out in that situation.

How about a dedicated button on the steering wheel or close, that when pushed only turns on the brake lights, without actually applying the brakes?

If cars are packed in like sardines, the speed everyone is traveling at should reflect that. People shouldn't be traveling at 40mph when there's only one car length of space in front of them. There should always be enough space to safely stop.

There's usually quite a bit of gap between the brake pedal triggering the lights, and the brakes actually beginning to grip.

See post 25.

Tailgaiters are always wrong and stupid. Wanting to punish tailgaters by performing dangerous manoeuvres is also wrong and stupid. Nothing complicated here.

I didn't see it as a punishment. Moreso trying to communicate to the other driver that you're way too close and need to back off.
