Replaying it and it's just so damn dated and full of bad design

No difficulty settings so game is just piss easy
No alternate character route to give replay value
Steve is a terrible character
Voice acting is bad but not funny bad like RE1. Just competent enough to be utterly bland and boring. Both the Voice Acting itself and the dialogue.
Backtracking done wrong, long stretches of running back and forth across the same rooms/corridors for no reason beyond padding. Very few short-cuts or clever alterations.
Loading screen/transition every 4th step
Horrible tank controls
Clunky inventory where you have to keep opening it up to use items or switch weapons
No more beautiful backdrops
Reuse of Wesker
And how could I forget, the plot was "Claire is looking for Chris." then she casually sends Leon an E-mail telling to go tell Chris what happened.....

And let's not even touch on the woke politics where Steve and Claire walk past hundreds of corpses, zombies, literal torture chambers where blood was everywhere, guys with their guts hanging out etc but then are horrified and deeply disturbed/freaked out by a crossdresser.

People give RE3 shit but at least it tried something new. The dodge mechanic and the "Make a choice!" moments.

Code Veronica just feels like paint by numbers. Sure the graphics are better than the PS1 but for Resident Evil who cares? RE1/2/3 still look fucking great. There's an art style going on.

Can't believe it got such rave reviews back in the day.

It was supposed to be.

It was meant to be RE3. That's why it was a direct follow up to RE2.

RE3 was supposed to be a minor spin off game called Resident Evil: Nemesis about Umbrella Corps grunts (presumably Carlos) being chased through the city by Nemesis.

But Sony threw a fit due to Capcom promising them that main RE titles would be Sony exclusives, so in development they turned Nemesis into RE3, put Jill in it to make it more important and turned RE3 into Code Veronica.

It had WAY more budget and development time than RE3.

pretty much agree here.

I mean it's not a horrible 2/10 game but of the classic RE games it stands out; in more bad ways than good. the environments are very bland and depressing, and you essentially run them all over again as chris.

It's playable but no more than a 6.5/10 game at best.

it was going to be the third story arc in RE saga, but not the "RE 3" title itself.
the development of "RE 3" ended as RE4, DMC, and a few other games.

CV was not going to be 3, it's another project from the start. both Last Escape/Nemesis and CV was not the original project for RE3.

Kamiya explained. My vision for the next game was to make something brand new and more provoking. As a result, I decided to make Resident Evil 3 for PlayStation 2. The PlayStation 2 was initially meant to launch in 1999 before Sony ultimately settled on its March 2000 release in Japan, over two years after the release of Resident Evil 2.
Another project greenlit around this time was Resident Evil CODE: Veronica.

It's a more cumbersome game compared to 2 and 3 but considering it was designed for Dreamcast then ported to PS2 and GC, it turned out to be a decent game. It's definitely the bastard Resident Evil Game.

I like it but it's not my favorite.

That part where you have back to back boss fights and switch between characters is the dumbest design decision in any RE game. You're basically just fucked if you have no weapon on Chris or an earlier save.

Oh yea, that was annoying. But overcomeable? Absolutely.

Haven't played 3 but its probably better than that too.

3 is a controversial one

it got flack for

1. only one character campaign
2. Reusing Areas from RE2
3. An awkward dodge mechanic (that was repeated in RE: Revelations)
4. Being shorter than RE1/2 despite the single scenario

But I give it credit for at least trying. Nemesis was a great villain and the dodge/make a choice moments where at least trying something new to the formula

Code Veronica was just paint by numbers

The streets in RE3 look better than anything in CV

I agree although to be fair I don't recall Claire getting a save point so if you die, you're not fucked
